Season Long SEC Football Discussion Thread

I don’t get this line of thinking. You have to have a backup QB. Everyone has to have one. Generally, you need 3 scholarship QBs. Malik will have a shot at the starting job next year when Stidham leaves. I get the hate for Gus and the theory that he’s not good at developing QBs, but we still need backups. If you’re wishing for all of our backups to leave to be appreciated, you’re wishing for the football team to fail, which I don’t understand.

If you have backups who do not get quality reps or development, are they still backups? I would prefer the kids go somewhere they can actually make a difference and be appreciated. Gatewood and Malik do not play the style of ball that Gus has chosen to adopt. (They play a style that Gus could win with but ....) Gus’ better option is to keep finding transfers with Chris Todd/Jared Stidham playing style if he is going to stay committed to his current anti-DT offense. Having Malik and Gatewood on the roster does nothing should Stidham get injured. They will be starting from square 1 when they step on the field ie. handing off, running a designed read or swing pass until Gus gets the happys abouy letting them have some leash.

I think many got excited with Malik and Joey getting us back to having true dual threat QBs, which I personally think is a must when you're running Gus's offense. Gus seemed to realize that but now it's starting to look like a trend back to trying to win with pass first guys. I just want to win but I'm skeptical of Gus molding the offense enough to truly have a wide open offense

Both Izzo and D’antonio rode out the storm of very similar allegations and now no one cares. Can’t see Urban getting fired but he’s gonna take a lot of heat here

We already know Malik is a stud. Makes no diff if he can’t hit a WR on a button hook with the red jersey on in practice. Kid runs circles around defenses. Can launch it 60 yds downfield into single coverage.

You can just mark off 8 Ws a year with an electrifying athlete and then you just hope he can throw it a little in time for UGA/ Bama. A stud RB and a living TE would be helpful too. Some semblance of a RZ playbook.

nice to see both of these guys are at least both back and running. Healing quicker than I expected

I'm pretty pumped that this kid stepped up. I'm sure some are dubious about how good he's gonna be but I think the secondary is now gonna be a real strength.

Same. He didn’t seem to be very agile to me last year but maybe he was just playing scared as a freshman
Thing is, I never thought Trovon Reed was anything special at wr or anything but now he’s a 5 year vet in the nfl at CB. If he’s alrea ahead of both T Leornard and Sutts then i have confidence that he’s gonna be pretty good. Just my opinion

What happens if he ends up starting (which is being speculated if Horton moves to center), plays great, and then goes onto to get drafted and has a successful NFL career?

I'd hold off and see what happens with him at guard before we deem him a scrub.

So Horton is moving to center? that could be a really good move. I think everyone with a brain knew that kaleb kim was never gonna be the answer

What’s projected starting with that?

Tega-Harrell-Horton-Ashley-Driscoll?

That would be my guess if Kim can't win the OC job.

If Horton moves over, then the right side decided by:

Ashley vs Hamm
Driscoll vs Troxell

Apparently they took the #1 jersey away from Gatewood and gave him #13. Said he has to “earn the #1 jersey back”.

Seems we’ve gotten a head start on doing everything we can to piss off/run off another young stud that could help us win.

Between this, the Chandler Cox news and the OL situation, seems this year is gonna be another comedy of errors on The Plains.

I’ll eat crow.

On a different subject, I told everyone on the boog when we signed Tyler Carr he would never play a meaningful snap of football at AU. Nailed that one.

Our 1 bluechip OT signee of the Malzahn era sitting 2nd string guard is disappointing at best.
With what we pay Grimes, and as useless of a recruiter as he is, he’d better work development miracles with the few talented youngsters we do have.

Otherwise, his ass doesn’t belong spending another second drawing a paycheck from Auburn.

it's not totally shocking. I believe I remember people projecting Ashley to guard when they evaluated him at the Under armor all star game. Austin Troxell was a borderline 5 star dude until he got hurt so it's no like he's a total scrub

Anyways, I'm not gonna get all in a hissy fit about any of this. We have a 1st rd qb and a top 5 defense in the country. We're gonna be just fine as long as stidham is healthy.

Heading into the season with no every down RB on the roster, a patchwork OL, and a passing attack with the simplest route tree in the conference doesn’t exactly instill confidence.

Just prepare yourself and temper your expectations.

10 wins would be a miracle with this team.

sounds like Hurts doesn't feel any loyalty to Saban or the program. Sounds like he feels disrespected and will have no issues bolting if he's not the starter.

I know Holland was dope last year, but I really think between TD and Big Cat that we’re gonna have the best pass rush since the Groves/Mclover tandem

Gang, really hope Matthew Hill wins the punt returner job. Thought he looked like one of the best playmakers in the country during that UA all star game.

Also don't understand the darius slayton hate. He's one of the best deep threats out there. You guys act like it should be a guaranteed catch everytime it's hurled down to you 60 yds down the field at full speed.

I haven't been able to find the tweets again but I saw some stats that completely highlighted Slayton's season. He had one of the best yards per catch in the country and one of the worst catch rates of anyone in the country (with some kind of minimum number of attempts).

It is part of the system that I hate. Where our main passing play across the los is a bomb and therefore feast or famine.
