Season Long SEC Football Discussion Thread

I haven't been able to find the tweets again but I saw some stats that completely highlighted Slayton's season. He had one of the best yards per catch in the country and one of the worst catch rates of anyone in the country (with some kind of minimum number of attempts).
isn't that kind of expected when all you get an opportunity to catch is deep balls?

I'm sure Ryan davis and Hastings had awesome receiving % stats because all they catch are screens. Just goes with the territory

It is part of the system that I hate. Where our main passing play across the los is a bomb and therefore feast or famine.
yeah. It's just part of their gig. I don't think he's super limited. It's just a hard gig to consistently catch over the should bombs at full speed. It's like someone whining that someone's 3pt percentage in bball isn't the same as their free throw %.

Hastings caught 3 TD passes, Slayton had 5. I do agree that Davis caught more screen passes, but Slayton also dropped a ton of balls that weren't deep balls. I found part of the stat but not the tweet, Slayton caught 23 of the 61 passes he was targeted.

stats say he caught 29 but I guess it's just splitting hairs. A real idea of how good he is would be some stats relative to other receivers on deep balls. I'm guessing even the best only catch close to 50% of balls over 30+ yards. I certainly don't think he's an "embarrius" and he's more in line with Sammie Coates and Ricardo Louis, who both got drafted and and both still in the league and both were underappreciated by some boog fans. Just my opinion.

Calvin Ridley caught 63 of his 92 targets.

Ridley had Jalen Hurts throwing to him most of the season, Slayton had Jarrett Stidham.

Slayton has a few great characteristics Gus likes: height, straight line speed, being older, being in Gus’s “inner circle”, etc.

But he’s nowhere close to Coates’ overall athleticism, physicality, or play-making ability.

In the LSU game last year, he embarrassed himself and our program. We targeted him something like 11 times and completed 1-2 passes... with like 5-6 of the incompletions being drops. That’s when the nickname was born.

I know I will get disagreement here, but I don’t give a shit. NCM would/will catch 65-75% of the passes we throw to him, if Gus could just get his head out of his ass and start seeing WRs as all-around players instead of just “my jet sweeps guy” (ES), “my fly pattern guy” (DS), “my screens guy” (RD), “my option routes guy” (WH), etc... you know, like non-amateur coaches would.

my guess is most of those 63 came from high percentage throws. This chart kind of tells it all. Like I said, 50% ish for slayton from most of his targets isn't that bad. And that's assuming all of the throws were good, catchable balls

Not SEC, but can we talk a bit about how Deandre Francious has completely fallen off the cfb planet? Went from preseason potential heisman 1st rd pick, to getting injured and no one mentioning him again.

Kind of interesting. Guess there are just bigger stories at FSU right now but I’m surprised there’s no hype about his return in a system that probably suits him better

He has to be better post-injury than that kid who played for them all last season. He was horrible from what I recall.

yeah, who would have thought there was a major program out there with worse qb depth than Auburn?
Well, luckily we didn’t have to find out if we were worse. I imagine if Stid would’ve went down before the UGA and Bama games, they may have looked similar on offense to 2012.

Kevin seems so quietly confident that this defense is gonna just too legit. Really excited that Javaughn Myers is finally coming along and doing well. Still think the secondary is gonna be a strenght and not a weakness.

Anyone ever heard of Jack Driscoll? Every nugget I see related to the O makes my eyes roll.
I honestly think we're gonna be fine. Really do. We have 3 super experienced guys on the OL, a good WR corp, and a 1st rd QB. I know people hate Zahn for good reason, but I do think that we're gonna be good. Kam martin is pretty damn good imo.

I just don’t like our chances game 1 against a top 5 coach who always does more with less. Gus v Peterson after a whole offseason tends to look like a huge advantage for UW.

I feel like defnese wins the first games of the season? Could be wrong. But the defense always seems to come together quicker for everyone over the offense. We've legit have the one of the best 3 front 7s in the country and we have a top 10 pick qb. I think we'll be fine. Plus it's kind of a home game. Defintiely not saying it's a guarantee bc it's gus, but AU has a lot advantages working in its favor

Our defense will be badass, but don’t write off UW’s QB. He’s no scrub.

yeah. As I've gotten older, I really do realize that postivity is way more constructive and just better than negativity. Absolutely need to know and understand both sides of any argument but it's just better to not be a douche for now on.I really honestly do think we'll be fine on offense. Way too much talent and experience not to in my opinon. and I think some of things that people are worried about are way way way overblown,

I think I’d feel wonderful about our program as a whole if we’d sent Gus packing for whatever Arkansas offered him. Give me any up and coming coach, and the roster we have right now and I would have a full hard on 24/7.

I was a kirby smart guy when the gus hire happened and I think Scott Frost is gonna be the most legit guy ever. But timing has so much to do with this stuff. sometines I don't understand who you think Au could have legitimatley gotten to replace gus when then 2nd best program got Ed O and the 3rd best got Dan Mullen. Shits tough to lure coaches now.

This. I really could give a shit. I read the threads because people post in them. I really have not followed signing day, spring football, summer workouts, or fall camp in 2-3 years because with Zahn it is not a matter of if he will pull defeat from the jaws of victory but which games it will happen in.

looks like it's Kam Martin and Boobie Whitlow at the top. No one really actually expects Cox to get serious carries. I still think Whitlow is the starter after game 3 or so.

Yeah the only time I expect to see Cox back there by himself is on 3rd and 4 when we’re throwing it. That way Gus can make certain that everybody in the fuggin stadium knows we aren’t running the ball.

Just a random prediction for all you boners. I think Matthew Hill will be a boss. I don't think he's super fast, but you could just tell during that UA game that he is the type of silky athlete that makes big plays while making it look effortless.

I'm excited about this kid. Gonna be really interesting next year with him and Pappoe fighting for the same spot

ha. And right on cue I see an article that features him

Speaking of newcomers that will make an impact in the SEC this year, DR just got granted NCAA approval to play for uga in 2018. That kid is scary good and now gives them a bonified big play deep threat at WR. They will be better on offense this year than last, and even better next year than this year. Really wish we could land some 5* studs at RB and OT. Was looking at the pictures from both practices and the studliness difference in the two RB’s squads is laughable. ugas entire RB squad has the Bruce factor.

You don't/didn't think Hardman is a bonafide big play deep threat?

I still don’t think Fromm is the type of QB that can take advantage of true burners on the outside. Like if his WR gets deep separation, I don’t think he has the real arm strength to get it to him without letting the DB recover

Lol at Marcello's guess at the depth chart

LEFT GUARD
Marquel Harrell, junior
Brodarious Hamm, redshirt freshman
Tyler Carr, junior

Marquel Harrell is one of only three linemen with starting experience and he wrapped up this job in the spring, easily. Watch out for Brodarious Hamm, folks. He could be a monster

I do. They are very similar. Think MH will do more in the screen/slant/sweep part of the game. Goodwin is pretty dang good too, and Ridley is going to be a good big body guy, but they are licking their chops with DR. His separation speed is insane. More of a true/polished receiver.

They are just flat out loaded at the skill position, especially in the backfield. They have 4 backs that could probably start for most any team in the country. 2 of which are Tfroshz Oh and they have Fields too. Not to mention they will have the best OL in the league. Just makes me super jealous of the riches they have on offense.
