so, I’ve been working on this one and planned to save it for Friday, but a complete stranger on the internet has annoyed me enough to go ahead and drop it now before it’s a fully cooked thought
the biggest advantage we have over most teams - especially this UNC team - and the best chance we have to overcome their rebounding advantage is that our bigs are much more active, and will turn you over far more than you’re accustomed to... an offensive rebound doesn’t do you much good when it’s immediately taken away or deflected as you kick it back out, and our bigs are great at that... add in blocks, and you get a feel for how many potential loose ball/transaction opportunities you’re giving yourself - and those are key to our offensive production because we’re one of the most efficient transition teams in the country
so, what we want to look at is combined blocks/steals... and since most teams get far more steals than blocks, most teams get a majority of the combined total from their guards/wings... considering Jared plays backup 2, we’ve got a 5 guy rotation compared to UNC’s 6 guys, but the minutes and numbers align similarly
Jared/Bryce/Malik/Samir/JVon
217 combined - 196 steals, 21 blocks
White/Williams/Johnson/Woods/Black/Robinson
210 combined - 166 steals, 44 blocks
they’re not quite as quick or active or take as many risks as we do, but they’re much longer and contest better and block/alter more shots... but the combined numbers have the similar affect and lead to virtually the same number of loose ball, quick change of possession, transition opportunities
the difference is in the front court - they mainly play 3 guys, but I’m gonna add Huffman and Manley just to help their numbers
Maye/Brooks/Little/Huffman/Manley
134 combined - 67 steals, 67 blocks
Chuma/Mac/Danjel/Horace/Austin
296 combined - 147 steals, 149 blocks
our bigs do more of each than theirs do combined... Chuma alone has 112... we’ve watched Horace just rip the ball from dudes for 4 straight years... Austin has 40 combined and has been hurt all year and only played 346 minutes... we moan and groan about Mac because he’s not nearly the defensive force he was last year, but he’s still got 65 combined... and even Danjel is deflecting passes and getting steals from outside his area lately
you hear talking heads going on about turnover rate - and they’re right... but they undersell it, because so much of it comes from our front court... our bigs don’t rebound well, they block shots but get out of position a lot going for blocks, but what they do better than any other bigs they face - is they straight up take your shit from you... habitually
you miss a shot, get a rebound, they deflect your next shot, you get a rebound, and then do you
A - make the shot and wear them down... or
B - get your shit taken and look up and Jared is laying it in or Bryce is shooting an open 3
we can afford to give up some rebounds because we make up for it by turning you over, blocking shots, or keeping you from even getting the ball to post in the first place
but there’s not an easy stat or number to point to and wrap all of that up in a nice, neat little soundbite... but that’s why you have my dumbass here to talk about it
