@MomentInTheSun Where would Austin go? He can’t prove he can stay healthy for a season. I mean he’s big but he really hasn’t done Rick.
I don't know man. Kid's make irrational decisions and sometimes have dumb people whispering in their ears. Jared is rumored to not be coming back too and it's not like he's on any draft boards either. I hope they both come back but I don't think it's some guaranteed foregone conclusion that they both do

At some point you have to try and get paid for your skills. Whether that is the NBA, the D league, Europe or whatever. How many years is Austin’s body going to be able to earn him money? My guess would be not many, and he needs to earn while he can. Would love for him to come back, just wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t.

This just doesn't work like football does. There are so many options for guys who can't make the primary league immediately compared to that sport. And the path to going from "outside the NBA" to getting in it is 100x easier than trying to get on a NFL roster after you go undrafted. The system is setup to develop and expose these guys so that teams can fill needs and bring them on when needed.

We're going to have to accept that kids will leave when they aren't on draft boards because that's the way it works in hoops. It's gonna happen to us more and more with the level of player we will have under Pearl. A guy like Harper can give it a run here in the G league and get paid a moderate salary (I think they get like 7k a month minimum) and if it doesn't work out he can be in Europe at the age of 24 making 200-400k a year playing hoops. And he's certainly good enough to play in other pro leagues around the world and get paid well. I'm less sure on Austin because of injuries, but that's also motivation for him to go start his pro career faster, in case he can put together 3-4 years injury free he doesn't need to miss earnings from one of those just to prove himself. He'd get a chance just because he's big and has hoops pedigree.

About the only thing Harper can come back and prove is that he has a floater/midrange pull-up. There's just not much more to add to his game that is going to make him suddenly more attractive to the NBA at his size. If I'm being completely neutral and advising him I tell him that it's likely the best financial decision to go play pro ball, start the clock and if you don't make the NBA get paid overseas. Unless you just love college and want to play another season because you are having a ton of fun and love the college life, then stay and enjoy it. But financially/career wise, it's probably a sound decision to go get started on his hoops earnings.

He’s probably not thinking like this but there’s still value in getting his degree and adding to his AU legacy. He’s already a Boog legend but he’d legit get a statue if he comes back next year and gets AU in the tourney again. Plus, he strikes me as someone who will probably get into coaching and he’d need a college degree for that too I believe. Delaying a grind in G league a year isn’t the end of the world for his basketball future

Most recent word is that Jared is going to return now. Need to pray BRUCE can convince our beloved Chuma to come back and contend for SEC POY and move into the lottery.

Do other teams worry about kid leaving early to go play overseas like the Auburn fanbase does?

I never heard of this type of worrying until the last couple of years

Are you asking if other basketball programs lose kids to turning pro early and then don’t make it in the NBA and end up in Europe? I would imagine that happens some.

if Jared is guaranteed a look in a NBA camp, and a 2-way contract at worst - he should go

anything short of a guarantee of that, he should come back - and maybe even come back if he doesn’t get a draft promise

giving up 1 year of G-League/Europe salary compared to a senior year at Auburn, as the most popular guy on campus, and a chance to go (back) to a Final Four? you don’t turn that down to go play in Italy or Kazakhstan

Austin is a different story because he’s only got a limited number of games left in his legs... but Jared isn’t leaving for anything short of a NBA roster

Not that i want to know a world in which AU basketball and Chuma are mutually exclusive, but Bruce would be the last guy to ask a player to stick around. These guys were sold in part that if they came and played for him he could provide them a path to the NBA.
IF AU men's basketball wants to compete for top 50 recruits, they have to put guys in the league, the boogs need to get over their separation anxiety. As longs as the new kids are handsome and fun to watch i'm kool with one and dones, but think most of the kids we'll land will be around for at least a couple of seasons.

No. Referring to worrying bout players like Harper leaving early, with his only realistic destination being overseas.

We did this last year as well.

I just didn't know if other fanbase's worry about players leaving early when said players won't be drafted.

I am genuinely asking this. We haven't really had even these type of players in the past.

Isaiah Thomas got drafted and he’s smaller and the same exact numbers Harper puts up. It’s not out of the rea of possibilities for Jared to go in rd 2

I won’t be shocked if he comes back or not. I don’t really think his draft stock is going to get that much better by playing another year. I also wouldn’t be shocked if he made a team or got to play in the G-League for a while. I’m not “worried” about it, but he could definitely leave. I assume other fanbases have conversations about what their roster will look like next year and discuss the possibility of kids leaving early.

I 100% agree with the latter. But the last two years, Harper specifically, we have "worried" that he may go play overseas early since he can't improve his draft stock anymore.

I think Okeke will definitely be invited to the NBA combine and we will have to sweat it out on him.

But I'd be a littler surprised if Harper got invited.

But I'd love to be proven wrong and Harper end up a 1st round pick

It sounds like Jared understands the NBA isn't happening and that's why he's expected to return. I hate it for him, but I'd be shocked if he ever gets a serious look in the NBA.

I'm optimistic he can make a roster. With the way the game is played today I think he has a shot with his range and quickness. His height is hurting him, but I think he has around a 45 inch vertical which is a positive. Maybe another year to get stronger and to get a little more national notoriety could go a long way with the way he is perceived by NBA scouts. I've seen less talented guys get a shot for sure.
