I like him because hes got zero connections or loyalties to anyone in Auburn. That was my #1 wish.
I like him because hes a good looking black man which is a huggggeeeee improvement for the university image wise over a fatass old corrupt white grandma lookin dude that loves funnel cake.
I don't like him because he is massively under qualified for this job and that means growing pains.
He's the Gus Malzahn of AD hires.....better than a chizik, better than jacobs...so.
6/10.
I'm fine with this part, it's a roll the dice hire but that's soooooo much better than getting someone from the Jacobs network or other GOB network to come in. We desperately needed fresh blood with no ties to anyone and IMO at least, ESPECIALLY needed someone who doesn't see their career needing to end at AU in order to be successful. Jacobs biggest issue was that he saw no path to any other AD jobs and wanted no other AD jobs so his only focus was staying in power and in good graces of powerful people at AU. A non-AU tied AD can buck the power brokers if he wants, as long as his reputation in the AD world is good enough that he can keep moving on and up.
He's young and unproven but lauded by people inside that AD world as an up can coming guy. We're either getting 1 of 2 guys based on that:
1 - guy who is charismatic and thus good with fundraising but whose reputation as an up and comer is basically because he knows what to say (buzzwords yeah!!!) and will turn out to be "standard AD" with nothing really great or nothing really horrible in the end. Just a basic executive type with no huge downsides but also no creative or risky ideas that might help us overcome some of our built in issues. He will always hire committees to make all his decisions and like many AD's, he lives and decides every day in ways that protect his next paycheck first and foremost.
2 - guy who is hyper motivated, extremely driven, out to prove that he can do this job and become a monster player in the field and one of the biggest names in these jobs. Thinks outside the box, takes risks because he likes big payoffs and trusts his instincts. May swing and miss sometimes, but isn't scared and won't let a few power brokers sway him into more conservative, less risky positions when he is convinced he's right. Think young Jeremy Foley, before he got all rich and comfortable.
Flip a coin...who knows which one we got but it's certainly better than funnel cake man.
