If you mean that we offered the job to others and got turned down a few times, that’s not the case.
I will disagree with you here. There were plenty of other candidates who had more experience and/or are black and wanted this job. The lack of significant AD experience on AG’s resume wasn’t lost on anyone, and it certainly made for a steep hill to climb during the process. AG “won” despite his resume. And you’re sorely mistaken if you believe Leath is interested in hiring anyone because of the color of his / her skin. I believe Leath exercised extensive diligence and vetting during the process — he is well connected to the AD community through his past experience on the NCAA board. As I’ve mentioned here and others have mentioned elsewhere, AG has earned the respect and admiration of prominent ADs throughout the NCAA. I believe that in soliciting references and recommendations for AG, Leath recognized the key question wasn’t whether or not he should take a chance by hiring AG, it was whether or not he could afford not to hire him.
Does this mean AG will be a great AD at AU? Nope. But I think your assessment of the hire is unfair and ill-conceived. That’s just the opinion of this old, Yankee white dude.
