OT: AUBURN BASKETBALL

We haven't talked to Okoro much lately. We're still recruiting Kobe Brown hard.

Surprising on Okoro since 247 has him as a 5* SF and Rivals has him as a 4* just outside the 5* range at #33 nationally, and IMO we need at least one SF in the next two classes. Okoro has been really high on us. Not sure why we haven't talked to him much.
Probably some Boog tennis corch pissed off family. What about that Akingbola kid? I like to think we at least start getting some kids to come to some games.

Interesting. I’m sure the 2019 stuff will work itself out. I guess there was nothing about the 2018 class? Guess they’ll be dipping into the transfer market

I think we wanted Akingbola to reclassify for this year, and I’m not sure that has happened or will happen. I think he’s a possibility in the spring.

Not much on 2018. Total guess by me, but I think we will take 1 HS kid, 1-2 GT, and possibly 1-2 true transfers in this class based on what the roster looks like after the season.

I don’t know if it’s laying it thick. Almost comes across as a bit passive aggressive within the context of their whole situation
Ah, yeah I gotcha. Don’t think that’s what he was going for but definitely applicable to their sitch.

Hope his mom KHS
Just my thoughts, but when this finally settles she shouldn't be invited back. It all falls back on Chuck but she is to blame too. Chuck talked her into taking the money. She was hesitant and didn't want to jeopardize it but she trusted Chuck and ended up taking it. I don't know how much it was, around 8, 9k probably. Penny's to what Austin would have been worth in about 6 months.

Guess I should just let it go at this point but its so hard. I saw Leath on the twitter say we're hoping the NCAA still restores their eligibility. I'm assuming they have all the info at this point. Probably a lost cause but is there any chance they still do what's right or is he off to Yugoslavia in a few weeks or whatever?

Fugg you Chuck.

Even though I do think there's a real possibility that this team woulnd't be playing this level of D if Chuck was still around coaching.

I honestly don't blame the mom that much. Someone just hands you a stack of cash what you gonna do? Chuck is a moron and the NCAA is trash for holding the hulking young children accountable for the actions of others.
yeah. I don't understand how you punish the kids for the actions of their parents. That's just stupid and backwards. And even if Austin knew. What's he gonna do? How's he gonna keep his adult mom from not taking money? He has zero control over the situation

Hello 911, someone just gave my mom a boat load of money. So stupid. This whole thing is so Boog U.

Yeah the NCAA is garbage. It has been handled poorly from every angle. Hopefully by some miracle they are able to pay back the money or come to an agreement on amount of time he sits but at this point I highly doubt it. Oh what could have been.

Yeah, it's like the NCAA wants to create some hotline for hulking young teens to rat on their parents. Hey, if you're a hulking young stud, and your parents have paid for your education and also paid for you to play travel ball and all sorts of shit, if you see them getting a couple grand after they invested so much in you, then it's your obligation to rat them out. Thanks.

How long can AW and DP possibly sit around in limbo before they make a decision about going overseas?

I would think they’d like to make that decision in the next week or two. They may not go overseas though. Some guy on the bunker said he’d heard Purifoy doesn’t want to go overseas and could stay and would want to play here if he’s eligible. If there is a suspension, Wiley is almost certainly gone, and he will probably leave in the next week or two. Not sure he’d go overseas. He may just workout with a private gym. He could possibly stay with the team and work out and prepare for the draft.

They may not be playing in the actual games but you can bet your ass they feel just as responsible for the 11-1 start as the guys on the court do. Their efforts on the scout team have definitely shown in the team’s preparation, especially with AW going up against Mac and Spencer everyday. As for going overseas, yeah, they would stand to gain a little from that but they’d probably get as much or more from just staying at AU. The cost would be a lot less as well.

I don’t want to be rude to you guys, but I question the b-ball IQ when some of y’all think it’s a foregone conclusion Heron leaves. He’s nothing special. No athleticism, relatively short for the NBA, cannot go right very well, cannot pass, and has a shit attitude. He’s a descent college player, but he will never be a successful nba player.

That’s kinda why I asked the question recently. I like him as a college player. I think he has a solid game at this level. But I’m not sure it translates to the NBA. And while he’s been very consistent, im not sure he’s lived up to the 5* billing. So, I'm not exactly sure why he’d leave early other than that’s been his (or his dad’s) plan since he arrived here.

Absolutely agree. Great post!

Here’s an update from Pam.

Auburn basketball sophomore Austin Wiley is enrolled in school for the second semester and has no plans to go overseas to play in advance of the NBA draft.

So say sources close to Wiley and his family.

Wiley and Danjel Purifoy, caught up in the investigation that led to former associate head coach Chuck Person’s arrest on fraud and bribery charges, have been suspended through Auburn’s first 13games. They continue to wait for the NCAA to make a decision on restoring their eligibility.

Both Wiley and Purifoy, whose plans are uncertain, were on the bench cheering on their teammates in an 89-64 victory over UConn on Dec. 23.

It is not a certainty that Wiley will leave for the NBA after this season. That decision will depend on where he is projected to go in the draft. His draft stock has likely been hurt by the ongoing saga.

My inner boog says, "Hot damn, we going to da ship again next year! Woohoo boys!!"

I don’t think anyone has said that he’s a lottery pick or that he’s guaranteed to be drafted. But I think he’s gone regardless bc this seems to be his plan and I don’t think he loves it in Boogville. He almost transferred out last year and Bruce brought in Doughty as a replacement bc he’s not banking on Stapha staying

Yeah the Staph camp made it pretty clear they wanted to be off to the lig after this season. His game hasn’t progressed enough though to even really be in draft discussion. I think the expectation was he’d play his way into the late first/ early 2nd rd but that hasn’t happened yet.

If he does that, methinks the second half of the season will be one to remember.

I was casually looking at the players' stats last night and Mustapha has now sunk to under 30% from behind the arc. Worst 3 pt shooter on the team statistically so far this year

Crazy. We board so hard it's like I don't notice it that much. We just keep getting it till we can make. Hopefully have a splash party on Saturday and run Ark out the Clam.

I think he’s gone just bc of all the rumors of him wanting to transfer after last season.

I also think he’ll get a lot more attention if he continues to do well in conference play and (hopefully) helps lead this squad into the tourney

He will need to up his production, mostly by leading us with more scoring and doing it efficiently. I think most of his frustration was because last years squad was an internal mess, lots of infighting and greedy guys wanting to get theirs and the team not playing together. That's not a great environment to try to win or play good ball. I'd be shocked if he still felt the same. I know he'd love to be able to leave early, but that may be a bad decision if he isn't going to be a 1st round guy. So easy to end up on the bench in a D-league town if a franchise isn't more heavily invested in you.

He's not been a NBA type player so far this year. That's actually been good for us as we're not depending on him, but I think we will need him to be that guy as the season goes on and he'll need to step up if he's going to make the jump. Late in tight games he's got to be our guy. We've got to get the ball to him and let him go to work. If that happens and he performs well he starts jumping up the draft boards. I'm actually more worried bout Mac right now....he's freaky athletic and that draws attention from NBA scouts.

Yeah I'm wondering if he can even be that guy for us. I rather give it to Jared and let him go to work late in a ball game. I love when Staph just takes it to the rack but when it's crunch time he has a hard time getting around anyone and doesn't get great looks.

No kid should lose their eligibility for an entire season or career bc of their parents decisions. That's BS. Sit a few games, tell mom/dad they have to pay it back and then let the kid back on the court/field. I'd say that if it was Minkah Fitzpatrick too. It's not on him. It's on the parents and coaches. The idea that kids should be the ones standing up to their parents to stop this is literally insane to me, I never would have had the balls to stop my dad from doing something he was determined to do. The other part that I would include is that HC and assistants are responsible and you have some sort of "3 strikes and you're out" rule for HC's. A strike is a player getting paid under your watch. Strike one, you get fined 25% of your yearly salary. Strike 2, you forfeit an entire years salary. Strike 3 your contract is voided and you are placed on a show cause that limits your ability to work for X amount of years in CFB. I guarantee you that after Strike 1 happens the HC's are going to be very aware of what every assistant is doing, and while it won't stop cheating it would completely stop the dumb ass stuff like having an assistant funneling money to players for agents/financial advisors that isn't even benefiting the school or the HC. Yes this would scare me for Bruce right now, but it's a better system than telling Austin Wiley he's got to overcome a huge hurdle now in getting to his NBA dreams because his mom is an idiot. Let the guys already making millions deal with the fallout and let the kids play the game.
