OT: Boogs Not Mens Softball

What's the weather looking like in Auburn today. Will they get the game in before the rain sets in?

Not great. Projection looks like rain in the afternoon, a break, and then rain around 8-9 PM. Not sure if we can get it in today, which means two 7 inning games tomorrow if it can’t be played. Even if we get started tonight and it’s delayed, that game can be finished as 9 innings on Sunday, but the scheduled Sunday game will be 7 innings.

I’m sure I will regret saying this, but it seems like two 7 inning games might actually benefit us.

Holland and Williams starting to get going. Holland was 6-12 on the weekend with 5 runs and 5 RBIs. Williams was 3-8 with 3 RBIs and 4 walks. Both hit a HR today. Since being benched for the Jax St game, Williams is 7-15 with 6 runs and 5 walks in the last 6 games.

Hope Woley is ok. He got pegged on the elbow in the last inning against bama in game 2. Didn’t play in game 3. His replacement dropped a ball on a double play that would have given us the sweep. Oh well...

Yeah, we need him available, but the freshman who played for him today, Brody Moore (not the freshman who dropped the ball last night) had a big day and had a 2-out single to drive in a run to make it 4-3. Moore was 3-4 today and made 2-3 very good defensive plays.

Looking at the NCAA Regional picture, we're 15 in the RPI. From an RPI perspective, we're in really good shape to be in the host discussion if we finish the season strongly. We play RPI #6 UGA and at RPI #19 LSU in the next two SEC series. Winning both of those series puts us in position to have a top 16 RPI and a 16-14 conference record, which might be enough to get one of the last host spots.

Right now, hosting looks like a possibility, although we need to climb in the SEC pecking order to give ourselves a better shot. Vandy, Arkansas, Miss St, and Georgia are all locks to host IMO. So, that's already four SEC hosts. Then there is a group of teams that I could see 1-2 hosts coming from.

RPI 15 Auburn (12-12): UGA, at LSU
RPI 16 Ole Miss (15-9): Miss St, at Tenn
RPI 17 aTm (12-11-1): at Bama, Arkansas
RPI 19 LSU (14-10): at Arkansas, Auburn

I think Ole Miss is going to host. With their remaining schedule, I think they get to 18 wins, and with that RPI, I don't see them not hosting. Then, it becomes a question of whether the SEC can get 6 hosts and who would be the sixth. There have been a couple of times where more than 5 SEC teams hosted (7 in 2016 and 6 in 2004). If it gets 6, we need Arkansas to show out in their last two series and we need to win both of ours. Arkansas plays to two teams we'd be competing for that last host spot. And if we beat LSU in Baton Rogue and finish with the same record, we will have a better RPI and should get the nod over them. But honestly, Baton Rogue probably gets the benefit of the doubt if the resumes are that close.

We’re hitting .285 in the last 3 SEC series, and that includes 6-36 (.167) from Julien and 6-34 (.176) from Howell. We’re hitting .304 in those 3 series from the other 7 guys. Our walks are also up from 2.9 per game over the first 5 series to 4.2 per game over the last 3. The offense seems to be coming around a bit. If we can get Burns healthy and Owen fully back, I think we have a chance to finish pretty strongly.

@wcw3au1 is 12-13 in conference great? Just trying to get a handle on your greatness scale

Not at all. A 4-2 start on the road was. I’m amazed at how dense you are in an attempt to troll.

Just FTR, to get a sense of your greatness scale....you know how many teams in MLB are off to a great start this year, through 20-25% of the season? Not a single damn one.

Find a Twins fan and convince them their .667 start and best record in baseball isn’t “great”.

As awful as it’s been, if you told me before the season that after 85% of the season was over we’d have 7 starts out of DD and Tanner, I’d take our record.

True. If I’m being honest, I’m a little disappointed and frustrated with this season, mainly because I expected more out of the offense. I expected the pitching staff to have some moments, and of course it hasn’t helped having guys like Daniel and Owen miss so much time. But for the lineup to have its struggles with the guys that have struggled is disappointing. I know it happens in baseball, but the prolonged droughts from some of our most important pieces hasn’t been satisfying.

I know what you mean. I sure didn’t expect what I thought were our three best players to regress to any extent, much less where they are. Saw the lineup changes you posted on tbb. Hilarious comment by somebody regarding “running out of spots at the bottom of the order”...

We brought in 6 or 7 pitchers this year including two jucos, but you really can't count on any of them. That is a big reason we are still incredibly thin on pitching even with Burns and Owens back

We needed that one. About 8 years down the road, if Bliss lands in the right park in the show, I think he’ll be a 20-30 guy. Love his approach at the plate. Now let’s score 10 and roll the dice.

People can talk about injuries, but this team could still be so much better.

Georgia won the 3rd game because of two three run homeruns. Meanwhile we get nothing from Williams and Julien

In a game where we desperately needed more pitching Garrett Wade is nowhere to be seen because he hasn't come close to liiving up to the hype

Yeah, we have four guys we can really count on consistently this year: Burns, Owen, Anderson, Greenhill. And in most weekends, we’re using three of them in one game. There just isn’t enough veteran presence in the bullpen. I like Fitts and Fuller and think next year they can really help us, especially with the experience they’ve gained this year, but Fitts has a hard time missing barrels and Fuller has his inconsistencies. Then you have Wade and Skipper and Morrison that might give you a few good hitters and then struggle or might struggle out the gate. And we can’t really rely on the JUCO guys at all, although Horn has looked better of late (and might be reliable next year after a full offseason after his surgery). Blake Schilleci has been about the most reliable guy outside of our top four from the bullpen, but he’s a max 1-time-through guy if you want to keep runs off the board. His stuff just doesn’t play all that well against good hitters in the SEC. It can work for an inning, like we saw today, but eventually they adjust and don’t miss.

The silver lining in all of that is we should return every single pitcher we’ve used this year besides Daniel and maybe Anderson (only because I doubt his draftability gets any higher and he has leverage right now). And we’re bringing in another very good pitching class headlined by LHP Hayden Mullins. If you can get a guy like Garrett Wade to harness his stuff and be a second backend guy like Greenhill and mix in 2-3 of these new arms while having the current young arms continue to progress, you have a nice pitching staff next year.

I personally think next year is going to be our best chance to make a run at a title we have had in a long time. I did not expect Fitts to have to pitch meaningful weekend innings this year and it’s unfortunate for him that we are in this position, but if he, Fuller, Skipper, Morrison and Wade can make meaningful strides in the offseason then we have a shot to have our best season ever.

Yep. Combine those five with Burns, Owen, Greenhill, and maybe Anderson, and that’s a competitive core group. If Mullins, Barnett, and David can step in next year and give us some quality innings as freshmen, that’d be great.

But making a regional is really important IMO. Those freshmen need that feeling if we want it to translate to experience next year.

Agreed. And I haven’t completely given up on this group. If we make a regional then we have a shot to win it. If we win it then we have a shot to get out of a Super.

I haven’t given up on the season. Anytime you can make a regional and have two starters like Burns and Owen, you have a real chance to win it. I think we’re better suited for a super regional because of the pitching issues, but in either scenario, we need the offense (all 9 guys) to be productive. Right now, we have 5-6 guys hitting pretty well. Julien and Williams are just brutally bad right now. If that changes at all, we’re a tough out at a regional.
