+++++ Boogs (HYGs) vs South Alabama Official Game Thread +++++

Wiley ain't it. Just ain't there. Body is great. No hands, no real feel for the game. It's a shame. Probably born 20 years late TBH. Game done changed.

I’m not giving up on him yet. He has to be more assertive for sure, but we have done a crap job getting him the ball. I want to see a game where he gets 10+ touches on the block before I make a final assessment.

He’s a bust.

stretch needs more PT

goddamn guys - I leave to record the podcast up 12 and all hell breaks loose? what did you do?

eh, who cares - a win is a win... I'm sure BRUCE will use this one as a firm, but fair, um teachable moment, for the HYG's, and they will all be better men for it down the line

They closed on a 20-4 scoring run before Isaac hit the game winner..

We pooped in it for a solid three minutes..

I agree with you and I don't at the same time... I'm very conflicted

I think we do a very poor job of getting him the ball, so at this point I'd rather just treat him like Mac or Horace instead of trying to force him the ball... but - if we can actually get him the ball early in the clock without everyone standing around - then I'd give it to him every time until someone stopped him

I'm not writing him off - but J'Von just isn't a pure enough point guard to maximize Austin's strengths, and the entire offense is suffering as a result... it sucks, but our offense is very much an island of misfit toys right now, and eventually we're gonna have to pick a style and go - and unfortunately, Austin on the low block just isn't that style

I really love how many people we’re playing this year.
I still think it's crazy that we had four first year Boogs on the court for quite awhile going down the stretch. I was thinking BRUCE was giving the other guys some breathing time, but now I'm thinking more like the future is NOW. Wish Turbo was coming along better, but BRUCE knows a lot more than I do of course.

Breaking down the stats a bit Flanigan was +14. As was mentioned he was ballin, playing great D, just needs to get that J right.

Squad had the 3 ball flowing. Had just about put them to bed for good when Jvon stroked another 3 that gets waived on a questionable moving screen call. Totally lost our mojo.

Okoro is a God we all know that. Got a lot of love on social media from the draft people he’s gonna be in the discussion for #1 overall pick at this rate.

Saw some great stuff from Johnson, Stretch. Cambridge looked fine not sure why he didn’t play as much.

The bad obviously Danjel and Austin. Horrific. Danjel gotta dribble out of the press he’s so tentative. Did nothing, doesn’t help Jvon at all. Jvon got his own issues but at least when Isaac plays the 4 he helps get it up the court.

Overall I’m thrilled with the W no matter how sloppy cause that L would have stung for weeks.

The +/- can be a little misleading. Cambridge ended with a -12 but I'm not sure that means he played poorly. 1 rebound in only 9 minutes of play.

The size on Okoro, Flanningan, and Cambridge is perfect. All three of those dudes look like studs out there.

Made this comparison on the twitter machine earlier today, but I think Okoro's best NBA comp is a guy a ton of people hate and that missed some of his peak NBA years because of some weird stuff but would have been a Top 10 NBA player at that time and a multi-year All Star if his head had been on straight.

Big, thick and around 6'6". Legs that are strong enough to root out a 4 and push them off the block. Quickness and instincts to lock up a smaller PG or SG. Can be your stopper for anyone 1-4. Good in the high post with decision making, high hoops IQ so he's going to get you good shots and drive when it's there. Not the smoothest J but it's solid and can get better over time. Likely never the leading scorer on a great team but will be the best 2 way player on teams that compete for titles.

He's the non-baggage Ron Artest...who is highly underrated as a pure basketball player and was headed towards averaging 20/8/5/2 for a few years before he derailed himself.

Nice breakdown. A more recent comparison we are all familiar with is Grant Williams. I would love to see us make Okoro the focal point of our offense and run a large percentage of our half court sets through him in high post. I am incredibly impressed with Okoro's ability to both attack the basket decisively from the elbow and distribute the ball for other guys to score. Given he's only 3 games into his college career, the latter is the biggest revelation thus far. Kid plays way beyond his years.

Looks like we fell to 30 in the Kenpom rankings.

@DM8
Noticed that. You can't put too much stock in any of the computers this early though given how much of a swing every game can have. Last night will eventually be a tier 1 win, imo. USA is a solid team and they will wreck their conference.

I don't think he actually comps to Grant much at all, but I'd like to see him add some of the things Williams had by his final season at UT. Okoro has a much quicker first step, is a better athlete on just about every level and is already a much more versatile and impactful defender where Williams was really only able to defend a couple of positions and Okoro can defend 4. Williams had some nice elements to his offensive game that were developed over time that would make Okoro ridiculously hard to deal with. If Okoro had that post game in his arsenal right now he'd be crazy dominant. He's also a 3 and Williams was more of a 4/5 hybrid so I'm not sure you can expect him to have a developed post game, especially as a true freshman.

I think he's going to be the center of our offense before too long. Not really any other options IMO. Bruce talked like that was gonna be Wiley but there is just no way that's happening. I think it's gonna be Okoro that we have to start most sets with. He's already shown great ability to work that elbow area and make the right decisions/passes and his ability there is going to force some teams out of zone. I have no idea how limited his post game is but if a team plays man and puts any 3 on him we should be attempting to post him up (for starters we should have more success with these entry passes as 3's aren't accustomed to denying that look like most 5's who somehow push Wiley off the block consistently, much to my dismay). I'd be interested in some 1/3 PnR stuff with Okoro and J’Von/Samir too. Bruce is playing him more minutes than anyone else and won't take him out when the games are tight. I think we're going to see more and more put on him every week because he's going to be the biggest matchup issue for our opponents all season.

Only problem with Isaac posting people up is that I don't think teams are going to play much man against us. We will continue to feed him the ball at the top of the key though. Need to figure out a way to knock down enough 3's to not see as much zone as it looks like we are going to see.

If they're zoning he's shown the ability to pass extremely well. Hit him top of the key and find Samir/Jamal wide

I definitely think this should be a staple in the offense. However, if it is our only offense, defenses will adjust. We might start to see some 2-1-2 where they deny the top of the key. We are going to have to knock down 3's and dribble/drive as well. Young Isaac is a stud, but he needs help and that should especially come from our seniors.

In SEC play I bet we see a good bit of man. We don't have a ton of guys who terrify you off the bounce on their own. Wiley looks menacing but he's not consistent enough and I'd dare him to score 15+ from there if I was an opposing HC.

Right now I'd be throwing 1-3-1 traps and all kinds of weird looks at our PG's though. We've looked kinda lost until the ball gets to Isaac and he makes aggressive, assertive and smart plays. You were playing with fire doing this to SBJ with guys like Bryce and Chuma on the court too...but this group doesn't have that PG and I'd probably mess around with all kinds of junk traps and presses until we proved we could punish it.

It'd be YYYUGE if Purifoy would start slashing to the basket and taking advantage of his size. That would draw people away from Okoro and whomever is playing 5. As of now, people just expect Danjel to stand in one spot and pass the ball or jack one up from 3. He did it last year in the SEC Tournament and had success, why is he so timid now?
