+++++Official New Mexico St. vs Boogs Tourney Game Thread+++++

must’ve been that Bobbitt dudes game of his life... he’s got 14 in the first 7 minutes and averages 4.7 for the year

that’s what I was talking about earlier... if they get a random game like that from some scrub, then sure, they’ve got a chance... but that’s what it’s going to take

LOL. I thought the same thing. I’m watching it like this dude might be able to play a bit. Go to sports reference and look at his stats and was all ewww! Dude got hot on the home court.

Just looking at their 3-point shooting against their toughest opponents (really just Kansas and St Mary’s) and they were 7-26 against KU and 2-18 against StM. Now they balled out at the WACT and hit a bunch of 3s, but I imagine the defense and length from Kansas and StM gave them problems. Gotta think we can disrupt them in similar fashion.

The game I watched vs some tiny school they got tons of open 3's because literally any post touch was an automatic double and they had guys just open everywhere if they moved the ball. I thought "wow, one of these post guys. must average like 20ppg and be the conferences Grant Williams". Nope...that was just something they were going to do no matter who posted. It was really weird.

They play an odd 2-1-2 matchup zone, which is interesting and will probably present some challenges to us. Not sure I’ve seen anyone run a 2-1-2 since I was in junior high.

Yeah, the video I posted earlier had the opponent doing that. None of their post player seem that dangerous, and their shooters seem more worrisome. So not sure why they were inviting NMSU to kick the ball and swing it around until they gave them an open look.

the 5’9” lefty point guard loves to shoot from the top of the key and has a nice stroke, but he’s small and has a slow delivery

the Zamora guy off the bench is a chucker and could get hot because he doesn’t need much space

Brown, the guy with dreads, is their best player, but Bryce will take care of him

Chuha is a decent athlete and hits the boards, but Chuma >>> Chuha

they’re a good squad, but they’re not ready for the team that’s played the last 3 weeks, and we’re bringing an even better version than that one to Salt Lake City

Just some random stats/comments:

1) in the 5/12 matchup over the last 2 years, the 5 seed is 7-1, including 4-0 last year

2) the sexy 12 over 5 pick last year was NMSU over Clemson, and Clemson beat them by 11.

Not this is really relevant to this year, though

Kansas - UNC - Kentucky - Tennessee - Duke

and we can sign Gus to a lifetime contract and you will never be able to remove the smile from my face
A bit of history on our two SEC Tournament Championship squads
Both had to win 4 games to win it & the 85 team was the first to ever accomplish the feat. That Boog team doesn’t dance without winning the Championship. Both teams will have faced Kansas (2Rd) & UNC (3Rd), the later who finally eliminated us in Birmingham in a hellava game. UNC lost to eventual champion Villanova in the South Regional Finals. I’ve followed the Boogs for a long long time, & seen them play in I have no idea how many games, but that game yesterday was the best game I’ve ever seen them play. PERIOD

Can't recall exactly but since they introduced the First Four in 2011 we've had 3 or 4 years where the 5's had a clean sweep of the 12's.

There haven't been nearly as many mid major upsets in that 5/12 matchup recently as the buzz would have you believe. There have been bubble-like teams from larger conferences like Ole Miss and Cal getting wins as 12 seeds almost as often as some mid major upsetting a major in that game. VCU got beat twice as a 5 seed by another mid major in the last few years too. The mid majors are now often on the favorite side of the 5/12 game.

I always think anyone from the 4 to the 7 seed is at some risk. You are good enough to be a ranked team probably, but not good enough to have been a top ten team overall. That means you can be a little off and some other team be a little hot and you are in trouble. Fortunately for us we're playing like a top 10 team right now

Here’s the NMSU-St. Mary’s game. This is early in the season, but I can see where this team could give us some trouble. They’re aggressive to loose balls, quick and active on offense and defense, and play with a lot of energy. Still think we can handle them, but I’m not sure it’s going to be a blowout. Probably will be a tightly contested game for much of the contest. If we do get a lead, I’m not sure we will ever feel really comfortable with it.

Well researched tournament preview. Genius scholar has us beating UNC and losing a hotly contested rematch with UK. He fails to take into account we will have Wiley available this time around though as he notes their front court will beat us into submission again. Give us 20 minutes from Wiley the way he played Sunday against UK in that one and I like our chances.

St. Mary's PG ate them alive in transition. Jared should be able to have a lot of success in this matchup. NMSU hasn't faced a decent team in months and I think its going to be really difficult for them to suddenly adjust from playing shit WAC athletes to our guys after that amount of time. Chuma is going to seem like some sort of a basketball cyborg compared to the goofy slow white dude's they have been facing.

My only hesitation is that the travel and elevation may take a little wind out of the HYGs' sails for these first 2 match ups. We should definitely out talent NMST and all this lack of respect by a swath of the national media should fuel Bruce's "Us against the world" mentality he pitches to the team. Kansas will be a challenge but very doable. Pulling for a late 2nd half blowout in game 1 that will give the team a boost going into its first blue blood matchup.

I'm hoping for significant chAUlkie time as well in this first matchup to help fuel the rest for the HYGs

There’s quite a bit of predicting that Kansas won’t win their first game. Apparently Northeastern has a stud PG that will give Kansas all they want.
Interesting fact about Bill Self that I just read is that all but one of his tourney exits have come on the second game of a weekend. So rd of 32, rd of 8, and the National title. Basically, when he only has one day to prepare for an opponent, he sucks. Which is good news for us

I feel pretty good about the Kansas matchup. This a club that needed OT to beat the pathetic Vols.

First game matchup has me irritated still. Just the utter disrespect for the SEC champs. NM St is top 50 Kenpom which is better than some 8/9 seeds. Site is much closer for them. Still, this not a game a F4 squad loses so whatev we still get the dub.

If you look at their roster and avg minutes played per game, they have 13 dudes who average more than ten minutes per game. And only one guy plays more than 25 minutes a game. Maybe they try to out depth the teams in their shitty conference but I’ll be curious to see how they distribute minutes against the Boogs. Even against Kansas they played 12 dudes

To me, that says they don’t have many guys capable of 25+ minutes without a falloff in production. Why would you intentionally take a dominant guard off the court when his backup isn’t as good? Makes me think the talent across their roster is pretty equal but none are really next level type guys.

It’s also interesting to me that they didn’t play this way last year. They played 9 guys in the NCAAT last year against Clemson. Harris, the PG, is a returning starter from that team. And Chuha and McCants came off the bench. But they had a dominant guard in Loftin that played a bunch and carried them. The by-committee approach seems to be because they lack guys like Loftin.

I really would like to read and hear more people picking us to get upset in this first game. I think it would ease my mind a bit.
Auburn is playing like the Top Ten team they were projected to be, but so many fellow SEC teams perform well in SEC tourney and stretch before in seasons past only to lay an egg in the big one. I'm guessing that's where the media is getting this. I myself, cannot see Auburn not making sweet sixteen at least.

We're in this together now. To paraphrase The Hound from GoT "If any SEC teams get upset by a lower seed, I'll r@pe their f****** corpses!"

Almost everyone at CBS has us losing so that should provide plenty of fodder for BRUCE.

Dennis Dodd
Chip Patterson
Kyle Boone (who has Tenn making the final 4)
Jerry Palm (who has Tenn making the finals)
Matt Norlander

All have the boogs losing in RD 1.

IIRC, Bruce got hurt playing in high school and he ended up being a manager at Boston college. Parlayed that into a college job straight out of college when his coach went to Stanford.

All you have to do is look at Stephen to know Bruce could have been a stud baller if he wanted to be.

Ehhh. Blake wasn’t as glowing an excited about an Auburn win as I’d have hoped.
I thought he was fairly positive. He thinks NMSU could be a tough game, but also likes our chances to make the elite 8 and thinks we have a legitimate shot to win the region. That's a lot of respect given how much we scuffled this season.
