OT: AU Hut Hut Squad

Not sure how anybody not named Rice thinks that a true freshman QB is going to be close to playing as well as a guy that Bill Belichick thought was worthy of a draft pick. And we couldn’t beat good teams with him last year. You can say Bo is a running QB til you’re orange and blue in the face but he’s not going to be a “Gus” running QB. We have questions at WR as well. As far as Oline improvement, they could get better and still be below average in our league.

To think Bo or Gatewood will win at LSU, FL and TA&M is probably sunshine city. Two of those will be really good defensively. We should physically whip Oregon. We should beat the MS schools and Arkie. And we have 3 games that we could coach and win. I think 8 is possible and 9 or more would mean Nix is special or Gus figures some things out. Just don’t see that second scenario playing out.

We are discussing our offense having the potential to be better than last year. We are not discussing whether that will translate to more wins.

QB play can't get much worse than last year. You can be a Stidham fanboy and think he will succeed in the NFL, but that doesn't change how bad he was last year.

We are also discussing as if the OL will indeed improve, as you originally stated.

I addressed why I think they will take a step back. I addressed what an “improved” Oline could mean. Read it again if you missed all that.

Not a Stidham fanboy by any stretch. I just know that he has some talent. And our HC couldn’t make him better and couldn’t put him in positions to be successful and win much last year. Not sure why you think you know more than the Pats organization either while we’re on that subject? Just another one of those Kirby type arguments that you’ll never admit you’re wrong on? Funny thing is you would’ve gone to bat rice style for that dude before last season started.

You said, "Even with an improved offensive line, hard to imagine we won’t take a step back offensively. "

That's just crazy talk.

I don't care what he does in the NFL or what the Patriots think of him, he was not good last year. When discussing whether or not we can or will be better offensively than last year, his play last year is all that matters.

To put in perspective, his passer rating in SEC play last year was worse than Jeremy Johnson's in 2015.

And I was off the Stidham train probably before anyone

I really felt like we had a chance with Gatewood and a version of our NM offense. DC’s around the league will tell you Gump’s offense with a legit dual threat QB is scary. With an improved OL, 2nd yr Boobie/Williams/Schwartz and a better overall defense I was excited. I think Bo has everything that is needed to be a very successful QB in this league if he had the right coaching and played in the right offensive system. He could be a better version of Fromm if he was in Fromm’s shoes. I can’t say that I see Bo doing much more with the cards he has to play than Stidham did if we run the same offense that we did last year. I hope I am wrong, but I just can’t buy into Gump’s simplistic want to be semi-pro style attack. With that said, I still think we have enough pure talent to win 8 or 9 games. Guess we wil see soon enough.

So a shitty line cant’t improve and still not be good? Gotcha.

Also, you are too smart to think that QB play will automatically be better with a true freshman than with a second year starter who had NFL talent. That’s crazy talk.

I think Stidham sucked last year and lots of QBs of all ages would be an improvement.

he was bad last year... but he’s still more talented than a true freshman Bo and 2nd year Gatewood

idk why we’d expect younger, less experienced/developed, less talented guys to play better under the same coach

when Stidham takes over for Brady in 2 years and Belichik wins a final super bowl just to prove to everyone he can do it without Brady, I guess some Auburn fans will hate him for underachieving at Auburn rather than blaming Gus for ruining the most promising passing QB we’ve had in my lifetime... and Bo could very well end up 2nd on that list and is staring at the same fate

We all saw what Stidham did as an experienced Pro Style QB under Gus last year. I don’t see how anyone can think a kid straight outta high school can perform near as well as he did last year (and no slam on either QB). I hope I’m wrong, but I won’t be.

If we had a head coach I trusted I could get my head around some hype with what we’re returning. But some of y’all are really allowing yourselves to believe that a talented true freshman QB is enough to overcome Gus and I’m feeling for you.

For clarity, I fully expect Gus to Gus it up and win 7-8 gamed

Gus press conference tonight. Only time he’ll speak publicly before the Oregon game. Guessing he’ll announce Nix

The best thing about this move is it guarantees that I don't buy into any positive hype only to be later disappointed. **** any positive hype from this point forward. I buy into phucking none of the positivity

Bet heavy on 8-5 and a rinse repeat with Gus and more bs about Nix year 2, then 9-3 and rinse repeat Gus and Nix and this is the year BS 7-4 rinse repeat Can’t have a chance with changing the system for Nix year 4 who gas after 12 years of Gus FML #KillMeNow

The ceiling for this team with Bo at QB seems like it's basically 2017 AU, where we made it to ATL and may have had a chance if our best player wasn't injured. Nix can be Stidham like, and he may even be tougher and less likely to get happy feet and starting imagining the rush is coming even when it's not (this was a problem for JS and I'm interested to see if it's a problem in non-preseason NFL games too one day). That's still a good ceiling, I just don't trust Gus to get us to our ceiling anymore.

I was interested in the idea of a legit running threat at QB again. The kind that scares a DC and makes him do weird things to defend it. That's when Gus has an advantage and opens up his mind some. It won't happen in a more typical offense with a more typical QB. I'm still at 7-5 (I'm not quite a sold on the defense being dominant as some....good, but not elite maybe)

So you think we’ll be better offensively but only win 7-8 games....what are your thoughts on the Defense?

SEC ranks were 11th in YPG last year offensively and 8th in scoring. I think we could move up to 5th in both of those offensive categories and still only win 7. UF was in that 5th area last year and lost 3 but they only played 4 ranked teams all season and had like 6 auto wins.

None of that matters though really. The real question if how the Gus offense will look vs good defenses. It didn't look good last year. It feasted on bad teams and looked like garbage vs good ones. 2017 we had some good games vs good defenses. There's the success line for Gus...cause in his bad years he's been a big ole facepalm vs any good defense. Anyone want to bet on him when he's starting a true freshman, pass first QB?
