OT: AU Hut Hut Squad

Excited to watch on YouTube later. Matthew Hill is one of my picks for breakout player of the year

Well, don’t we all?

Good God - I’ve been watching the Caps game. Totally forgot about A-Day. There was a time I would have never forgot about A-Day. It’s just sad.

I'm the same but I think this say more about me as a person now vs what I used to be than it does about Gus...and man I hate Gus so it pains me not to pin this 100% on him.

How unhealthy is it to deeply care about A-Day? It's always been some variation of garbage, even if Gus has taken it to new levels. The fact that I'd ignore other fun things on a pretty spring day to watch a bland scrimmage is disappointing to me in retrospect. I may fire up the DVR tonight or tomorrow if nothing is going on, but the idea that I would have some of my week planning around either attending or watching this thing is sad.

It's a vestage of a simpler time with less recreation options and less insight into the team.

Still gotta see the whole game, but Gatewood looks so legit. Nix throws it very nicely too

My question on Gatewood...he had 2 TD's that were highlight plays but I'm not sure which statement below is true and it matters a ton in determining where he is right now

- He knew what the coverage was, knew it was a risk but trusts his playmakers at WR to make those plays. We haven't done enough of that since NM14 throwing it up to Sammie Coates.

- He didn't read the coverage, didn't know that there were too many defenders in the area and got bailed out by great talents at WR making great plays. This would likely mean a lot of INT's vs good defenses in non-spring games.

Had the same concerns, but if he is the starter, he’s gonna get a lot of easier coverages to throw against because of his running ability. If Seth Williams is drawing two guys deep, then that vacated a lot of space for Joey to potentially run into. Throw in too that AU has two guys in Stove and Schwartz that will stretch defensive alignment horizontally too and there’s just a lot of potential there. I’m team Joey.

Malzahn’s offense usually doesn’t produce a lot of INT’s. I don’t think it will start this year.

The only thing Gus could do that would surprise me is put together a competent plan to take Auburn to new heights, and/or make really good halftime adjustments.
I'll help by adding to your list.

Not pick his nose.

Not grab his crotch.

Not pick at his teeth.

Not run up the middle after a first down.

Recruit offensive linemen.

Not look like a lost baffoon.

I'll stop.

I do think he focuses on this, sometimes to a fault. But overall we don't throw a ton of INTs.

The outlier in that was the 15' Jeremy Johnson disaster where he averaged 1 for about every 13 attempts.

I remember that one time he threw it backwards. A buddy of mine said, 'well, at least that one wans't intercepted'

Watch his head... he locks.

I kind of expect that. That's not ideal but it's not as bad as throwing it into double coverage and not KNOWING that the safety is nearby. If he sees the S and knows he can fit it in there I'm good with it. This offense doesn't need to be NFL style to succeed. He's gonna get good looks due to the run game that he's part of if he's the starter. He doesn't have to be as advanced as Nix might be in the passing attack.

But if those 2 throws were examples of him having no idea there were other defenders in the area and he just threw it there thinking it was 1v1 he's in a whole lotta trouble.

That’s why I love BeAUx Nix. He already is checking down. He was only sacked 3 times in high school so he gets rid of the ball. He also won championships.

Love a guy like that.

Watching the a day game right now and Bo Nix is pretty damn impressive for a dude that just enrolled a few months ago. Way better athlete than I gave him credit for too. He’s a way better runner than Stidham imo, but I’m still team Joey

DJ Williams and Harold Joiner both stand out as well as really impressive athletes when they have ball in their hands

Kid was a straight baller in high school and given the chance will be in college too IMO.

I said the same thing. I was a little worried about the RB position, but I was impressed with those two mentioned above and I think Boobee has a breakout year as well. I will be pissed if #32 sees the field for anything other than special teams. Pair that with a much better QB running attack and we could have something brewing. As always it will come down to how well our offensive line plays and I am not sold on them being a better than average unit. I do like what our WR’s bring to the table this year as well. If Gumps offense has some new passing routes sprinkled in we could be much improved overall.

I’m more worried about our LB’er crew. Size, experience and depth could be a real problem. That and it seemed like our DB’s could not find the ball when it was in the air. I trust Corch Steele and his track record gives me hope, but if we have any more injuries at LB we might struggle to stop the run against teams that want to pound it between the guards.
