OT: AU Hut Hut Squad

From calling around to sources, this feels like it could become a two-horse race, with Auburn coach Gus Malzahn being the favorite. Malzahn was a very successful in-state high school coach for almost two decades before joining Houston Nutt’s Hogs staff. He also spent one season as the head coach at Arkansas State before he got the Auburn job.

The 54-year-old Malzahn is in his seventh season at Auburn, where he’s had two Top 10 poll finishes, including in 2013 when the Tigers lost in the BCS National Championship Game in the final seconds. He’s been on the radar among Arkansas’ heavy hitters for a while. He’s been on and off the hot seat at Auburn, and the feeling here is once you’ve been at a place more than four or five years and you’re on the hot seat, you’re never really safe. That’s especially the case at a place such as Auburn with its big-money boosters, sky-high expectations and Nick Saban coaching at the arch-rival. Malzahn had a big 2017, going 10-4 with huge wins against No. 2 Georgia and No. 1 Alabama, and he was rewarded with a seven-year, $49 million deal. The Tigers backslid last year to 8-5 and 3-5 in the SEC and thus his seat has warmed again.

This year, Auburn is 7-2 and ranked No. 13, but it has lost two of its last three and still has Georgia and Alabama remaining. Here are the key money details: If Auburn were to fire Malzahn, it would owe him about $27 million. If he left, he’d owe them $7 million. Would they reach some kind of middle ground, where Auburn might agree to 3 or 4 million? The timing for Malzahn to re-start his clock with a new school might be ideal, and a mutual parting of the ways that enables him to go home might be tempting

wait we didn't just sign him to the stupid buyout but it's a mostly one sided buyout and had he become a NC winner we would have potentially lost him for a fraction of the cost it would have taken for us to fire him? Am I reading that correctly and am I the only one that didn't know this already? How is this deal getting dumber to me now when it was already a historically bad extension to begin with

I believe you are reading it correctly. I believe that everyone realized it was just going to make it harder to fire Gus and realized the other side was never going to hurt us. That guy was a dumbass and fvcked up royally.

Wasn't sure where else to put this.

I hate Gus. I hate him more and more every time I see his name. If we don’t figure out a way to send him packing I swear I will find another school to support. I won’t do this again next year.

Someone is going to hit the Joe Brady jackpot next year. Imagine a Joe Brady + Kevin Steele combo.

It’s a little JABA to think that we might hire Steele. But if we made JB HCIW and paid him handsomely, I can imagine it working.

For personal reasons I’m hoping it is Steele. Take out the personal reasons and I’m seeing BGB in my dreams.

Not trying to be an a$$hole here but why does every AU fan always want to hire ex-coordinators? Like hasn't that failed miserably enough to not hire a guy who was a terrible HC before? The game is about recruiting. If you aren't hiring someone who can recruit, you're setting yourself up for failure.

I only said I could imagine that scenario working. Like it has for Ed O this time.

I have very personal reasons to wish for it. Normally I wouldn’t have been remotely interested in going that route. And I don’t blame anyone else for hating the idea.

If we go out and hire a proven, successful HC I’ll get behind that. And not just because it will be our first time to do so.

I know we don’t care about huthut anymore at Bruce’s HYG Hoops Academy but the Ferg did a deep dive on our D and finds it to the best we’ve had in 30 years. No wonder we’re still in great position to play in the Outback Bowl!

Think about how good these dudes stats would be collectively if we had an offense that could keep the ball and grind some clock when needed. They've had an insanely good season that doesn't show up in all the metrics mostly because they are exposed to far too many possessions too quickly.

I hate Gus, but I've really enjoyed watching those kids play on their side of the ball. I'd be a happier man if I just watched them and walked to the other room when we had the ball.

1988 DE is best in my memory, and this one would have to be the next. Especially with all of the new offenses they never had to face ILO of pure running games in the SEC at that time.

They’d be back on the field before you could take a piss and get back

@cookedw, I've been on a friends account reading tbb and see you defending as per usual. To ask specifically about your defending Bo, what makes YOU say he's a "good" QB right now? Keep in mind I'm thinking in terms of a

Bad
Below avg
Avg
Good
Great

type of scale.

Right now I'd have him as average with upside that can make him good. I'm not sure about great being in his future TBH. There's a good, not elite arm. He's mobile, but not NM14 or Cam crazy running. I just don't know what he has that can allow him to truly be great. I think his best case scenario is athletic game manager. Too bad this offense requires something freaky at QB to work well.

I am gonna give him credit for playing through some rough games and it seemingly not having the disastrous impact on his head that we've seen it have on other young QB's. Lotta guys would be massively gun-shy now or would have melted down. I also continue to think that any young, out of HS QB that comes to Gus is screwed because we a) don't call plays that help them and b) don't develop QB's at all. I think he'd be pretty good in the right system with the right coaches but if he's gonna spend his career playing for Gus Malzahn we're probably already looking at close to the best he can be.

His overall play is avg. His accuracy and mechanics are poor. Play calling does nothing to help the kid. Feast or famine to one area of the field often without a check down route.

He’s been somewhere between bad and below avg in all our big games except for the 4th Q of Oregon/ UGA where I’d have to give him ‘good’. He has no discernible NFL skills and obviously we aren’t gonna put the talent/ coaching around him. The WR and TE/HB rotation is a disgrace beyond Seth/ Schwartz.

He’ll prob get killed behind a disaster of an OL next year and can start working on a HS corching career. Maybe that’s what Gus is really grooming these guys for.

I've said he is a good QB. He has had his ups and downs. Since LSU, I thought he has been good in every game, including UGA.

I think playcalling has been horrible for the most part and hasn't always put Bo in the best position to succeed. But that doesn't let Bo off the hook for bad plays/throws.

If you don't agree with me, that's okay. I didn't agree with you when you defended the Avery Johnson hire

For somebody that acts as pretentious as you do 99% of the time, you sure get defensive when somebody asks YOU to support your opinions. I was curious. I’m sure we don’t agree on a lot. No being good right now is one of those things.

To address the last sentence, you might want to use that google feature. I’m sure you know how. I don’t recall defending the Avery Johnson hire. I’d guess I said we’d have to wait and see because we had no idea of how his abilities and style would translate in the college game?? But you feel free to quote where I said he’d be great.

I think you may remember me saying something about his accomplishments. At the time he was hired, he was one of like 6 coaches to have won 68 games in the history of the NBA. People, probably you, argued with me then that an Elite 8 appearance made Bruce more accomplished. I didn’t agree with that. Of course now Steve Kerr has changed that NBA bar, Bruce has a Final Four and Avery failed to get Bama over the hump. If I said otherwise, I was wrong.

it’s not just disappointment or disagreement over whether or not Bo is good or bad, because you can’t separate your feelings on current Bo from the fact we all know he won’t get better under Gus... it muddies the water on any discussion of Bo and changes the way you view him

looking through the lens of - he’s never gonna get any help from Gus, then Bo sucks, because he’s not physically talented enough to overcome Gus and that’s never going to change, and he will most likely regress until he’s a complete mess

looking through the lens of - he gets no help from his coach or scheme, is behind a shaky OL, has 2 reliable pass catching weapons, is a true freshman who should be redshirting and not playing, then Bo looks fine to me and has shown plenty to build on

unfortunately, we live in world #1

No defensiveness here. I can't search (it's down), so when it's back up, I can find all the spots you defended the hire if you'd like.

I also just like to screw with you because you get worked up over this stuff

I’ll look too. Would hate for you to edit. And I’m pretty sure you have me confused with someone else or have your “arguments” confused.

I think he’s talented enough to become good. Even under Gus. I just don’t see him being good now.

Nice edit Ricecakes!

Nice edit Ricecakes!

The first part was unchanged. The second part I added right away, but for whatever reason it took forever to go through.

Technology can be funny sometimes. I mean, your last two posts have each been double posts, which means you clicked it twice thinking it didn't go through the first time

Lol. Yes, you get worked up about this. So much so, that you tagged me on this board because you disagreed with what I said on another board.

We discussed Bo in HS. My bad. I won’t tag you anymore.

I’ve asked this before but does anybody here know of a good football board, not named the bunker or 24/7?

Other than AUfamily, are there any others?

By this I mean Auburn related sites, not it being a good football board
