Boogs v Kentucky

You're a fellow Greger. We're a family here.

This game worries me a little bit. Either he's gonna prove that he's gonna play like that the rest of the way or he's gonna try to show out since UK is coming to town and it'll backfire. If he keeps playing the same style of ball he's been playing the last 5 games, then he'll again have a quiet 15+ and could go off for even bigger numbers with Bryce being limited at best. If he goes out there trying to prove he's the best on the court and the most NBA ready and tries to force things on offense then it could be bad news for us.

Mustapha plays very smart basketball and I think/hope he'll continue to play the way he's been playing, but it's also really hard for a dude that good to not try to steal the show when a bunch of 5* NBA dudes come strolling into The Clam.

The thing is Stapha shot 45% from 2 and 42% from 3 for the entire season last year. His 2-point % the last 5 games is abnormally high, but his 3-point% is right in line with last year. So, I wouldn't be surprised to see Staph continue similar play for the rest of the season. Kinda reminds me of Bryce last year. He went through a rough slump for a while but made an adjustment to his shot and caught fire late in the season. Seems like Staph has made a similar adjustment and is seeing his production increase again.

Yeah, I hope so. I don't think Staph will lose his stroke like Bryce did last year, but he also has a great percentage because he creates space for himself and takes shots that he trusts he'll make. If he starts taking every shot available to him then it may backfire. He may end up putting up 40 though, so maybe it's a risk we're willing to take. I want Staph to drive to the basket. I want him to make plays at the rim and get fouled. The only area where he struggles a little, IMO, is when the defense does their part and takes away his access to the paint. Staph seems to be a little too indecisive when he is cut off and he then has a tendency to throw some passes that could easily be turnovers. I just think he needs to work a little on knowing where the other guys are gonna be in case the play does break down. UK doesn't look like they are a great defensive squad, but they are long and can cause a lot of trouble on those types of situations if you don't have a bailout option in case your drive is cutoff.

ANyway, I absolutely agree that Staph isn't gonna just go cold for a long period, his stroke is too good IMO. I worry that he'll play too aggressive rather than sticking with his normal style of play... Although, a couple of those DUNKS versus UGA sure did make me want to see him play a little more like Westbrook there for a minute

yep - we started talking about it a few games back, but Mustapha still has a long way to go to get his season long 3 pt % up to where it was last year... most of us expected him to take a little step forward there, so if that’s to happen he’ll need to sustain that 45% number the rest of the season - and if anything, actually shoot it a little better than he has the last 5 games

even with this hot streak he’s only up to 34% this year... if he’s gonna finish the year at 43-44%, then he’s gonna have to shoot closer to 50% the rest of the season

I think he’s just now starting to get hot and will have an ever hotter stretch at some point - hopefully about 3-4 weeks from now

no one to lead. No one to show the yungins how hard they have to practice and prepare. No guiding voice in the huddle. No one to tell them to get to the practice court early, stay late. No one to get in their ass after a mistake on the court. That's the issue. Cal can only do so much from the sideline.

Oh, and they just can't shoot. Oh, and they jog instead of run. And I can't forget the part where they sometimes seem they just don't like one another.

Those things.
Interchange Bruce for Cal and you just described that 2016-17 Boogs team to a T. Unfortunately for y'all, the difference is that our entire starting squad plus Mac and Spencer returned (sans the clusterfook that is the Wiley/Purifoy situation), whereas ya'll have some (I assume) one-and-done's. And it's looking more and more like our entire squad is going to return again (sans the great chalkie #KeimTime).

So, Kentucky's length is a legit issue for us. They have 5 guys at 6'9" or better that all play. And PJ Washington is a F listed at 6'7". Their guards are big too. Gilgeous-Alexander and Diallo are 6'6" and 6'5". They big as fvck. Quade Green is the only short guy on the court. And they don't sacrifice athleticism when going big like most teams do. I don't think they're an overly physical team, even with the size. The biggest concern has to be their ability to get the ball in the paint and score easy buckets. Thus far, we've done a good job of fronting the post and making life difficult for the guards to get the ball to the bigs on the blocks. Going to need another strong performance in that regard again.

Keeping G-A and Green from penetrating and getting to the rim has to be near the top of our defensive priorities. We might see a good bit of zone tomorrow night. We've been running that 1-3-1 pretty effectively of late, and if Kentucky beats us from 3 all night long, then so be it.

We've been surprisingly efficient from inside 3 for the last few games. I see no reason to try and stop that trend. UK is going to close out hard on 3s. We have guys that can get to the basket and finish and also distribute the ball well once we break down their defense.

Bryce is going to come back like the kid in Rookie of the Year and shoot 90% from three. Just need to make sure he doesn't fall on the shoulder
Then he learns that his shoulder brace was used by his mother when she was a kid and he grabs just enough courage to make that last second shot in the championship game.
