****** Boogs vs Washington Game Thread ******

I look at it as a win/win for me. If Auburn loses to Washington that just makes basketball an even earlier priority for me. While some will be crying like a bitch about a 89 year old offensive line coach, I’ll be sitting next Tim Hudson at the Clam. If Auburn wins then I’ll be entertained a week longer while I wait for the basketball team to tip off.

“I think we’ll really know what we have by Game 3-4.”

Gus (8/19/18)

Sighhh...

Instead of using the spring and fall camps to actually develop players and find the best players regardless of position, we spend another offseason playing tiddly-winks with Chandler Cox and giving the majority of the meaningful practice/scrimmage reps to upper classmen because, well... Gus is still an amateurish HS coach.

We’re going 8-4 this year, guys.
I continue to believe our biggest preseason practice issue is that offensively we must move at 60% speed, play our 1’s vs the defensive 3’s and live in fear of injuries. Hard to identify your best talent when practice doesn’t mimick the intensity of games IMO

Serious question for those in the know. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge as to if our guys think our practices are hard? Like physically beaten down when they walk off the field? I never hear any of our guys talking about being really pushed to the limit. Maybe they are and they just keep it quiet, but just seems like our SC program/workout regiment is weak sauce as of late. I used to think our team always looked ripped up like they could run through brick walls. Maybe it’s just the roids, but most of the bama and uga guys look like they could kick our guys asses in an MMA fight.

I just hear about how mad Gus gets when a 3rd string walkon defender changes out of the predefined defensive call and tries to make a play on the ball during practice.

We hired a S&C coach who specializes in fast tempo preparation then promptly abandoned our fast tempo mindset. There’s your trouble.

I don’t know if it’s a Ryan Russel thing, a Gus thing, or just kids actually starting to work harder themselves, but I find it odd that every year we hear stories of kids going into their jr and sr years “taking weights seriously” and reshaping their bodies. Happened last off season with Jeff Holland and now we hear about Kam Martin finally adding 20 lbs. I don’t know if that’s a work ethic thing, or a Ryan Russel not enforcing discipline thing, or a Gus having zero plan on how to shape these kids when they get on campus. Bc adding weight shoulda been the first thing Kam Martin did when he arrived at AU

More like we never really expected to have to use Martin as our bell cow, but here we are..

I think that on the kids. Most never had to work extremely hard bc they were always the most talented in the field in high school. Plus, we all know how they are catered to growing up so I’m sure most need to mature. But some kids like Deshaun Davis never had that problem bc they were a little undersized or more mature. You can yell at cal Ashley and push him but if he’s still “pillow soft” at this point its on him imo.

I’m guessing Shivers gets a few carries

I really want to be Confident about this game bc I truly believe we have an elite dline, QB, and potential to have an elite WR group too...but it's Gus vs Peterson who has had months to game plan.

I go back and forth on the Gus vs Peterson angle. Peterson has won some big games, but he’s also been fairly mediocre in openers at Washington. Granted, they haven’t played an opener of this magnitude under him, and that big game setting might bring out the best in Peterson. And with Gus, how does he operate differently with a returning QB and the defense we have? Does he trust his QB and his defense and coach accordingly?

Somebody that’s at all practices says that Seth Williams is going to be the stud of the young guys on offense. We’ll see soon. I’m ready. Wishing it was tomorrow.

As we creep closer I'm finding myself more worried about Kim at C than either of our safeties

By far my biggest concern, especially against Washington. He's going to see a legit NG who is a strong run stopper. Gaines might be slowed by an injury, which could be good for us, but Kim certainly has a massive test in game one. That's something I do not like.

AuburnHSV just said Dean. Made it sound like injury, but non season ending

Said broken/fractured hand. Guessing if he’s going to miss some games, it’s requiring surgery. Only reason I can think of why he couldn’t play with a busted hand.
