+++++ Ole Miss vs Boogs (HYGs) Official Game Thread +++++

okay got distracted, back to game thoughts

Wiley was great. We never forced it to him or made the offense run to him other than that cool inbounds play. That was the perfect way to use him.

Okoro looked solid. Needed to get a game under him. He didn't look slower or less explosive, just a little hesitant and a little rusty.

Jaylin da Gawd. That passing and dunking HYG is my new favorite human

We still couldn't get 3's from Danjel, Mac, JVon or Jamal. Man if we ever got just 2 of those guys going we'd Boog all over peoples faces.

Samir cracks me up with is "too small" stuff. He's to jumping over these guys he's just leaning on them and getting his herky/jerky style shots off while he bumped them off balance. He too Philly

Not sure if it’s been addressed but Jamal only played 3 min. Might be getting cut out of the rotation. but we have almost no guard depth. I guess slide Dcam down to 2? How do we see this playing out?

Bruce said recently that DCam was working at the 2 and 3 in practice. So, when JVon or Samir isn’t in the game, Cambridge is probably on the court. I think of the depth chart like this now:

JVon/Samir
Samir/DCam/Jamal
Okoro/Flanigan/DCam
Purifoy or Jaylin
Wiley/Mac

Jamal is probably only going to get a short run when we want to rest two of JVon/Samir/Okoro. Outside of that, we can get away with not having him on the court.

This whole Jaylin being kept from us for so long has me asking some other questions. Like why can’t Turbo get some run at 2? Bruce even said he was brought into play 2. Which I think is a bit of BS but he could definitely play the role of Jvon and Davion last couple years where we had 2 PGs out there at the same time. With the less experienced one playing 2.

Meanwhile Jamal is obviously not good. Not athletic. No discernible HYG caliber skills. Hasn’t made a shot in NINE games.

Jamal is a tough scene.

I remember Bruce a year or two ago about Chuma, when all the fans were wondering his freshman year, and early in sophomore year, why he wasn't taking over and dominating. He said something to the effect of that it's his job to know when a player is ready for a role, because you run the risk of killing a player's confidence if you let them take their lumps too early.

So I would imagine he was trying to do that with Jaylin, and now Turbo. The Jaylin one looks like he miscalculated, so I agree, can't imagine that Turbo is worse than Jamal, unless he trips over his own feet out there. Turbo could probably hit a three every now and then too, which Jamal has forgotten how to do

I don't think we miscalculated so much on Jaylin as we just didn't think we needed another 4 and thought we had a solid rotation plan. We were gonna play Ant there some with Austin, and Danjel was expected to be a key player who ate up 30 minutes a night. The other 10 minutes are maybe Ant or we move Ant to the 5 and play Okoro as a mismatch 4 cause he can totally handle any 4 we see. I really think they just believed we were too booked with minutes at the 3/4/5 to need him and thus were taking the attitude that he was in a learning year.

I'm still baffled by the fact Turbo can't get at least 5 minutes. Cause it's always been obvious we were short in guard rotation. I mean if we're down to 3 minutes for Jamal I feel like we might as well let the young man see what he can do. But maybe he's the worst defender in our history or fumbles the ball out of bounds on every other touch.

You would think he could get minutes at the 2 under the same formula they use Jamal. Jamal is just not good at a single thing right now. I thought that charge he took vs UT was admirable but a terrible call. We don't know much about Turbo but one thing I know he has is swag...if that is tied to overall team energy then that's all I need off the backcourt bench at this point.

I agree with what @jeramye is saying about the rotation. I also think that when he realized Jaylin might could help more he made comments about him defensively to motivate him to be a more complete player. When you think about the guys who played early for Bruce they all played their a$$ off on defense. I only say that because if it was simply the rotation I think he would have stuck with his generic comments about who he was behind. Now Jaylin is out there doing some great things offensively, but he is also causing turnovers and making good things happen on that end of the court.
