OT: NBA Draft thread

VIP Scrim notes:

9 pts. 5 rebs. 7/11 from the line. Made one nice and one. Threw up one really bad airball on the block. Looked pretty rusty and out athleted mostly to my eye but his squad won by a zillion. Still feel good about a return to Boogville.

He draws so many FT’s when we feed him. Any concern from you that he slows us down too much on O?? I know we need him on the boards and to body big guys. I still worry about it changing us.

I don’t really. I think we can kinda go with the hot hand between him and Mac. If we’re Boogin let Mac play if the shots aren’t falling and we need a bruiser to get us a dunk or trip to the FT line Austin.

Austin back in scrim action on ESPN app. Just clanked a couple FTs but 6 pts/ 1 reb/ at least 1 block. Had 4 blocks yesterday. Think he's shown himself well but haven't seen any real buzz about him or any other bigs he's moved ahead of on the board.

From ESPN combine guru:

Austin Wiley: One of the measurement winners -- 7-5 wingspan and 9-3 standing reach -- with tools similar to Nene, Wiley impacted the game on the offensive glass and showed flashes as a rim protector. With that said, he's still a bit stiff in the knees and doesn't quite fit the modern game in terms of explosiveness, agility and offensive skill set. Wiley is more of an offensive rebounder at this stage.

I take this to mean not draftable but could have spelled it out a little more for us.

Bigs need to be Clint Capela/Tyson Chandler types these days IMO. Bouncy long dudes who can protect the rim at elite levels, are great around the rim off PnR action and can defend all positions at least moderately on switches. Obviously the Rockets don't love CC guarding Steph on the perimeter, but it's not like he's Zaza Pachulia either. He can hold his own to a degree. Wiley would be toasted and served up for fresh memes.

Thats why those agility numbers are a problem. If I'm a GM I see him as a guy who represents the league from a decade + ago. If he was 7'+ maybe I figure I can gamble on being able to get serious post stuff from him despite those issues. But at his height there are a lot of 3's and 4's in the NBA that wouldn't sweat getting switched onto him in the paint and that's a problem for Austin. You want to be a more classic "big" in the league now, you have to be able to maul any non-center that gets switched onto you or your value is basically "boards and fouls" and that means a ceiling of 15 minutes a game as a rotational player IMO.

The only sites I’ve seen pumping AW’s performance were AU sites. He apparently didn’t make an impression at the combine like he did against the youngsters at the 19 and under games. I have mixed feelings about him coming back. We’re going to be good either way. Maybe he’ll be the difference maker in a positive way.

So Giannis’ little bro declared for the draft and is projected to get drafted? He was so ass when the Boogs whooped Dayton last season

Yeah supposedly he’s not great but I guess someone could take a chance with a late 2nd based on genetics.

I watched some of the game with Wiley. I am not saying he is NBA material but against the guys in THAT GAME he more than held his own. Looked like a good player, against that competition. Of course it is much different in the actual NBA lol.

Yeah he did pretty good. Of course basically all the first round guys sat out. His length and shot blocking was solid. Got to the line. Still only hit 50%.

I was thinking a Brandon McCoy was a guy he could surpass. He didn’t have a great combine but had better agility #s and hasn’t had surgery on both knees. He’s a late 2nd rd projection at this point. Most of the other 2nd tier big men showed about as well or better than Austin.

that Nene comparison really clicked for me... that’s a dude that was an effective starter 8-10 years ago but just isn’t a fit today

if Austin came back and has added Nene’s range - and he looked smooth shooting those 16 footers a few days back - he would murder fools in college but would still only be a backup, rotational big in the NBA

this is the first day I’ve really started to let my guard down and get my hopes up that it’s happening

Weird, they must not have talked to @DM8 :D
I would love to have him back next year, but I think he is gone. He was projected as a late first round pick after his freshman year and he's playing at a higher level now. Even if he gets a FA grade, I still doubt he returns. I would love to be wrong about this though. Having him for another year would be phenomenal.

Yeah I still think he’s gone but now guys can come back if they don’t get picked. I’d think a ton of guys will stay in the draft now so if he didn’t get picked would he still leave? Think there’d be a decent chance he’d rather return than go the FA route.

Gonna be moot when he balls all over the competition en route to the natty and a 1st rd grade though I guess.

Given his injury issues, I could see him taking a shot as a FA and then playing overseas if he isn't picked up. Obviously I'd much rather see him go the Maten route and just be a dominant college player and let the chips fall as they may after he graduates. Also agree his stock is going to go up if we give him the touches necessary to average 20+ ppg. He had a late first round projection after his frosh year and he's playing a lot better than that now. Its only a matter of time till the scouts realize that.

Chuma getting some love as one of the draft risers:

Chuma Okeke | So. | PF | Auburn
As NBA scouts express their disenchantment with the selection of star-caliber players available outside of the top of this draft, they are increasingly expanding the pool of prospects they are monitoring to instead try to find role players who can fill specific holes on their rosters. One of the guys who has caught their eye -- as either a 2019 or 2020 draft candidate -- is Okeke, who has taken a big jump from his freshman to sophomore seasons.

Still far from a finished product, Okeke gives his team tremendous lineup flexibility with his versatility and outstanding physical tools. Now listed at 6-8 but sporting a 7-foot-plus wingspan, a 233-pound frame and a reported 8-11½ standing reach, Okeke has comparable measurements to those of Josh Smith, OG Anunoby and Ed Davis. This should allow him to slide between any of the front-court positions in the NBA and even allow him to play some small-ball center as he continues to add strength to his terrific frame.

Very much a role player for 11-2 Auburn, Okeke is utilized in a variety of off-ball situations -- picking and popping, diving off the ball, executing basic passes, spacing the floor from the corner, posting up on occasion, attacking closeouts and dishing out of short rolls. Okeke's skill level in general is just average, as he is a rudimentary ball handler who is mostly a straight-line driver and barely gets to the free throw line, but there's a nice framework to build on long-term.

His solid feel for the game is reflected in his strong assist-to-turnover ratio, and he appears to have made significant strides with his jumper, hitting 38 percent of his 3s. This is notable since he was far from being a perimeter threat during his high school and AAU days, shooting just 6-of-34 in the 31 games logged by Krossover. He has good shooting mechanics and a reasonably quick release, even if he remains on the streaky side.

Okeke's primary value in the NBA lies in his potential to develop into a multipositional defender who can switch onto guards and wings while also capably putting a body on big men when needed. This is somewhat of a work in progress, as despite his terrific playmaking stats (2.9 steals, 1.9 blocks, 8.6 rebounds per 40 minutes), he isn't always quite the lock-down guy you might expect, being a little spacey at times off the ball and still needing to ramp up his level of physicality and toughness.

Okeke is in a tremendous development situation at Auburn and will have every opportunity to prove himself as the starting power forward on the No. 12 team in the country. He could certainly get some looks in the late first round this year, but he may be able to maximize his stock in 2020 if he can become a more consistent player on both ends of the floor. He's the type of versatile forward almost every NBA team is looking for, and it will be interesting to see how he fares in SEC action after being somewhat inconsistent through his first 13 games.
