Post Game Thread: Washington

Been watching the replay as well. Big Cat Bryant probably a little too aggressive and over pursuing on his rushes. He allowed Browning to get some first downs. But that dude is the most athletic pass rusher AU has. Dude is dropping back in coverage. And making tackles all over the place. He's gonna be a beast

Didn't realize either that Smoke Monday was the guy that got the final sack. Pretty telling that they trusted him to be in there on Washington's last drive

Big Cat is another that just looked too damn amped up. He lost contain a ton early on. I'm sure the film session will be a bit brutal on him and a few other young bucks. They are the ones I expect to jump the most from Game 1 to Game 2/3/4.
When was the last time the talent level was this low at the RB position at Auburn? I'm going to guess 1999.
Peyton Barber has absolutely maximized his ceiling and congrats to him for that, but I think that’s the last time our RB talent was this low. We will end up with a similar run game IMO.

You have to remember that Peyton Barber's year as the starter we had no QB. I would trade Boobie and Kam for PB right now. That being said, I don't recall us having much behind Barber so you might be right.

We had Roc and Jovon Robinson, and KJ was a true freshman that year. Jovon was getting as many (or more) carries as Barber late in that season and was more productive. That was a decent group.

That's right. We were way more talented. Yup. It had to be 99.

Not when you consider that Gus never runs more than 1 or 2 guys. Plus there isn't a single proven commodity on the team. What years are you thinking?
Well, going back to ‘99 is pre Gus years so it’s unfair if you wanna compair depth if you’re just putting it in that context. But like I said, 2010 to 2012 was pretty bad. 2010 woulda been terrible without Cam. Dyer’s career after that proves my point

We had Dyer, Fannin and McCalleb. I'd definitely trade our backs for those guys right now.

Really? A true frosh, a fumbler and the least physical back ever. No way. And I liked Fannin but Dyer wasn’t as good as people think he was

Yeah he was just the #2 RB in the country, a 5 star, broke a Bo freshman rushing stat and had back to back 1000 yard rushing seasons. I will be happy to bet you that he had more yards in 2010 than either of these guys you like will have this year.

Dyer finished 2nd in the SEC in rushing in 2011 (behind Trent Richardson) and was one of only two RBs in the SEC that year to average over 100 yards per game. Did this with Trotter and Moseley at QB.

Dyer was an absolute stud, who was just a bad apple.

True. But context is important. Let’s judge what happens after this season then. But going into some seasons, I promise you it looked worse than it did coming into this one

To those that still worship Boom, this guy is the reason our defense is badass. Not boom. What a total WOLF!

I still think Boom deserves credit for forcing Gus to understand and realize the importance of a strong defense and the type of culture it takes to produce that strong defense. He forced Gus to re-evaluate how we practiced, recruited, prepared, and thought about defense in our complex. Credit to Gus for wanting that, buying in to that idea, and continuing to build on that with hiring Steele, and credit to Steele for continuing to develop that defensive mentality. But Boom needs credit for helping fix that side of the ball. IMO it doesn't happen without his one year here.

Better keep this to yourself over in boogville

Boom gets some credit. But he is the most overrated coach in Auburn history.

Agree with all of this. Hope we can sustain it as well.

Did we pay him 49 million dollars?

I'm not sure either stint at AU could be viewed as overrated. He greatly improved our defense in one year in the most recent stint and we led the SEC in scoring defense in his previous stint. Hard to view either of those results as overrated. If you want to argue that he is overrated as head coach, then go ahead but nothing about his time at Auburn was anything less than stellar.

all of my major frustrations have been sufficiently covered... Gus always finds a way to leave you with a poor taste in your mouth

but... after more reflection, it’s time to give him credit, because he somehow has accumulated enough talent to win in spite of him

I’m not writing off the RB’s and OL as a total loss yet...
are we way way way worse at those spots than we should be? absolutely
do we have enough talent at every other spot to win in spite of them against everyone on our schedule but UGA and Bama? absolutely

so I’ll give Gus credit for somehow having enough talent to overcome his weaponized lunacy... I’ll be waiting for the other shoe to drop, and anything short of being undefeated going into the UGA game is a failure in my eyes... but I’m not going to hate on him too much until that happens

watching that front 7 is way too fun to ruin it by worrying too much about Gus right now

KS>WM>EJ

Boom’s time under Tubby he ran Tubby’s D. We had a good D almost the entire time under Tubby.

Boom’s time under Gus was good when compared to EJ. It was good for an attitude change. It was good for recruiting. But for game prep and XO’s, KS is far superior. Also wasn’t it Boom’s tirade that cost us a big penalty in the Iron Bowl?? Right now we are seeing all KS, WM doesn’t get credit for what is happening now. Had EJ stayed one more here and then we got KS we would still be okay. He was just a temp stop gap that left town far too soon to give a fair critique of his time here.

Boom was just at AU 1 year and inherited a fuggin mess. He also had no Carl Lawson for over half the year and was using Cass Mkinzy as the rush end. Honestly impossible to compare what he and Kevin have done

Yes, we agree... so other than attitude why do people still worship him so much? Because he shouts “BOOM MOTHER FVCKER”? His worship is created from fan fiction. His biggest fan ever was @Aubs84. It was a transition year. We now have a real coach that wants to be here.

No. His biggest claim to fame was getting hired in late December and coming in and saving AU’s terrible crootin class. He and T Rob gave us Carlton Davis, Javaris Davis and Jeremiah Dinson. All stars and starters in the secondary. He also was directly responsible for landing Ryan Davis who is currently AU’s best offensive weapon. Oh and he got Mike Horton too. He basically changed the attitude and drastically increased the talent level in a month

Oh yeah, and he got Jeff Holland as well. Just came in and gave us a bunch of studs

AU total defensive rankings over the past few years:

2013 - 79 Ellis Johnson
2014 - 66 Ellis Johnson
2015 - 64 Muschamp
2016 - 28 Steele
2017 - 14 Steele

If you tell me “Boom” didn’t have a Healthy Lawson I will tell you neither did Ellis for 2014.

The numbers don’t lie.

You guys can miss “Boom” all you want, I would take Steele any day over “Boom”.

Funny how EJ now coaches LB’s for “Boom” at South Carolina.

GD'it. I click on one Show Ignored Content and it all comes rushing back. Won't be making that mistake again.

I gave him credit for the recruiting, as well as Travaris Robinson. Robinson was the bigger loss IMO at the time.

Also Boom strung us along for a month while he took a vacation in the Caribbean before officially saying he would accept the Auburn job. He could have probably snagged a few others should he not have been slow playing us. My biggest rub with him is he didn’t want to be here and half assed it coaching wise after he landed some good players. His mind wasn’t here. He was intense and good for emotions but lacked in game planning etc. I could be wrong, sure...

100% agree. Folks in boogville lose their minds over these sort of facts, though

Even if Boom is the most overrated coach we've had, I think it might be the most important decision Gus has made for this program because it brought about a real change in attitude on that side of the ball, which Steele has carried on and made even better.
