The Coronavirus Thread

Is anyone else convinced that we’re permanently fvcked after this? Not gonna’ lie, this has done a deal on me. I’m not a depressive person, but I’m in the fvcking dumps.

As a whole no, but small business owners in certain industries are gonna have a hard time recovering

The aftermath is what I’m most concerned about. This is truly a nightmare for the global economy. Lump that in with people acting like it’s the apocalypse and making it impossible for people to meet basic needs for childcare, groceries, etc.. this is fvcked up man.

Yeah I think the local economic impact is what people will feel the most with this. I think you’ll see a lot of gofundme s pop up trying to save local restaurants and bars or to help pay their staff

its very interesting between what the UK and US are doing @DM8

they are telling everyone under 65 to go about their business... meanwhile we are telling everyone the world is over.
The UK was previously planning to just let the virus burn out. Experts warned them that would result in a million or more deaths. From what I have seen, they changed course after the Imperial College released a study showing what measures would be effective to cut the death toll in half. The UK announced all schools are closing today for the rest of the school year.

It depends on how we approach it. The best argument I have seen yet is from the head of a major investment firm on CNBC a few minutes ago. He said the economy will be destroyed if this drags on for a year or more. Most companies could survive 30 days with no revenue, especially with stimulus measures. They can't survive 6 months much less a year and the federal government can't possibly keep every company afloat that long. His plan was to shut everything down for 30 days other than essential services. Complete national lockdown with the national guard to enforce it if needed. Everyone stays home unless they are going somewhere essential. If that were enforced, the virus would be halted. China used that approach and it appears to have worked.

After 30 days, start reopening stuff with public health officials all over the place checking people's temperatures. (South Korea and China are doing this) Anyone with fever gets a rapid test (China has these now) where you get results in 15 minutes. Keep social distancing in place so you likely keep bars and restaurants closed another month and then gradually start relaxing the restrictions.

That sounds a lot better than some of the shit I’ve been reading. It appears that until we have a vaccine distributed to the global population that this will just rear it’s ugly head on endless loop and the cycle starts back again.. but we can’t continually shut everything down for 12-24 months. Everything goes out the door if that’s the only option.

Call me an optimist or fuggin ignorant, but once the curve gets flattened (which has begun to happen in Korea and starting in Italy) the virus becomes way more manageable and then the fear and anxiety fades away once people know they can at least be cared for if they get sick. Right now, hospitals are getting over crowded and we don't have an overly abundance of tests. But with everyone self isolating, we buy ourselves more time to get an adequate amount of tests and stuff. And once that happens, then we can start creeping back to normalcy even without a vaccine

See, the number of cases per day has started to go drastically down in italy. So I think cities like nyc and LA, places with high population densities, are gonna have a tough go for a few weeks. But smaller, mid sized cities that have practiced self isolation should be getting ahead of this if people continue to just not be stupid.

saw that they changed it a couple of hours after I posted that. Too lazy to go back and fix it.

That imperial college report is so depressing. I’ve decided it’s # fakenews and will just proceed with the quarantined lifestyle I’ve adapted over the last week or so. Which conveniently isn’t that much diff than my normal like other than now I can work from home full time and I didn’t have to go to some housewarming party I didn’t want to go to anyway. Only thing that sucks is no boog hoops or golf and I’m a little past due for a haircut.

Looks like I’ve been away since Friday. So nice this place can exchange ideas & not get caught up in all political crap going on on tbb. Animals running the asylum, and I guess Tate can’t stop it like humanity can’t stop this awful disease, at least for now.
My sons wedding of course has been canceled (already officially tied up tho), I’ve done lost a ton in the market, but the main reason I’ve checked out is cause no March Madness. Everything else will take care of itself, but the first good news I’m expecting is another HYG commitment.
SO MOTE IT BE!!

Has to be the same guy I saw. He’s been “shutdown” for 30 days already. Only carries a couple hundred dollars in his wallet, but made a run on his bank(s) for cash. I’m not in a panic at all, but others are/will be. I got handguns but went & got me a shotgun after hearing this cat.

@captAUmerica21 my new DIL is supposed to report to Maxwell AFB, and today one of the incoming 400 to report on March 31st has been exposed to the virus. She has been excluded until cleared & I was wondering it you had any inside. She’s having a tough time getting answers, & does her salary & service of 3 years start on the above stated date? TIA if you have any info.
Pretty sure MAFB was the first case in Alabama reported?

Basically pay and everything should start the month after on the 15 from what I understand, but I never listen soooo... but all defense travel is on lockdown. I feel really bad for the people in Italy who were supposed to PCS to somewhere stateside and had to ship their stuff already. Now they are ****ed.

This shat has me worried now. Seeing all these young healthy people die. No underlying health conditions. A 38 yr old lady from NO today past up taking the test so an elderly gentleman could have it instead. Died in her sleep. The family in NJ where 7 people got it. 4 died the other 3 are in critical condition. All of them pretty healthy and middle aged except for the mother. No one knows why it hit their family so hard. Feel like it’s just a matter of time before someone I know goes down. I like to gamble, but I don’t like the odds of getting it and being one of the ones who has trouble with it and not having a bed or a ventilator.

I’ve been in self isolation with the family down on the coast for 2 weeks. Small town where I can get food and spend my days in the marsh fishing. Stocked up the pantry and have a deep freezer full of fish and deer meat. I’m one of the lucky ones who can work from home and get paid like I was sitting at my desk. Same with my wife. Who knows how long it will last before they start cutting back our workforce. With oil prices tanking and the market completely F’ed, I don’t see an end to this anytime soon. Know a guy who works for FEMA. He just got back from DC and said shits going to get really, really bad. They want to shut everything down, but worry that can only go on for a month before the economy hole gets too deep to climb out of. Seems like they feel now we will have to accept a much larger casualty rate then ever imagined, and it will only start to improve once there is a vaccine, which could be a year or longer. He said we will never see anything else like this in our lifetime. Im just hoping that the weather warms up quickly and helps knock it down some.

Anyway, hope everyone here stays safe and healthy.
