Opening statement…
“LSU is having a great year. They’re a very talented team. They’re really well coached. Will Wade – this is only his second year in the league, so people aren’t as familiar with him and the job he did at Chattanooga, VCU and now at LSU. The combination of [Tremont] Waters and Naz Reid are really formidable as a point guard and a 4-man. For us, that would be Jared Harper and Chuma Okeke, so that’s a great matchup there. Jared Harper and Tremont Waters are two of the top two or three smaller point guards in the country. What a great matchup that’s going to be, speed on speed. They both do it differently, but they’re really important to their teams as scorers and playmakers, and they’re the focal point of every scout. Reid is a first-round draft pick at some point. He is big. I mean, he’s 6-11, 260 and moves like a guard. He’s shooting over 50 percent from 3 in the SEC. He’s just really talented, coming out of Roman Catholic High School, a McDonald’s All-American type. The big kid, [Kavell] Bigby-Williams, blocks a lot of shots and rebounds. He’s kind of like a 6-11 Horace [Spencer] and plays a great role. LSU rebounds 38 percent of their missed shots. They’re the No. 1 offensive rebounding margin team. They really do a great job of going and getting it. Some of those guys rebound like it’s their play call. Last year [against LSU], we played probably our best offensive first half of the year [in Auburn]. When LSU breaks down that tape, they’d be hard pressed to see us play any better offensive than we did a year ago. We hit our first seven shots and took control of the game right away. We get a lot of credit for having a great homecourt advantage and playing really well at home, but I’m very proud that we’ve won the last two times we’ve been down [in Baton Rouge]. That’s hard to do. I’m not sure how many teams have won two or three in a row down there. I’m sure they’ll be fired up and ready to go. It’s a Quadrant I opportunity for both teams.”
On Samir Doughty and Will Wade’s relationship…
“I don’t know what they’re contact level is now, but I can tell you Will had great things to say about Samir. He left VCU and Samir left at that time. He had nothing but praise. He thought I would be a good coach for Samir, knowing Samir’s personality and my personality. I’d like to think that he was right about that. I really enjoy coaching Samir. He wants to get better, he’s emotional and he’s accountable. Those are great qualities to combine. I thought that he had a good relationship with Coach Wade and I would imagine since he spent his first couple of years there, he did a lot of growing up [at VCU] and developing there. He has just continued that at Auburn. I may not have taken Samir if given the opportunity had Will not made such a strong character reference for him.”
On Quadrant I wins and how the Washington win stacks up…
“That can move depending on how teams do throughout the season. Back when we won [vs. Washington], we thought it would be. Back in December, it wasn’t anywhere close to be a Quadrant I win. Now it is. These things are all moving targets, depending on how teams finish up. We pay attention especially to Quadrant I and II wins. Those are the ones you’ve got to get. You can’t have bad losses and you’ve got to have enough Quadrant I and II wins. Right now, we’re fourth in the SEC in Quadrant I and Quadrant II wins.”
On getting off to a fast start on the road…
“I think the key to winning on the road is to start well. It’s easier said than done. It sounds good, but the reality is if you don’t start well, you can continue to compete, claw, scratch and fight and you can still have a chance. But, if you start well, it just has a better chance to end well. I think the opponent knows you’re there for a reason. I think the officials understand that you are prepared and they’re not going to take it from you. It’s always been a big key to winning on the road to start well.”
On Austin Wiley’s status and injury improvement…
“He’s ok. It’s been slow, but he’s really working through it. After five minutes in the first game [back], he was sore the next day. We practiced him yesterday [Thursday] and he was sore after, but he felt better this morning. He’s not at risk of reinjuring, but he’s definitely feeling it. I think the more minutes he gets and the more he starts to play, the more that problem will be gone. But, he’s still feeling it. I’d like to get him some more minutes against LSU, but I wouldn’t anticipate it’s going to be a drastic change at all.”
On injury updates after Florida game…
“I kept Jared [Harper] off on light duty yesterday [Thursday] when we had a good, hard contact practice. Chuma [Okeke] just had a pain in his … . That’s all that it was. Not that he is one, because he is not, but he had one and he played through it. That’s really good stuff there.”
